I'm going to just say no!

    June 26, 2017

This review will be long, but I want to be thorough.

I decided to stay at this hotel because it was within my budget. We (my son and I) were coming to Fredericksburg to stay overnight, we were going to a concert at a near by theme park. From the pictures online the hotel appeared clean. The hotel itself was okay (I can't say great), but the customer care was horrendous from one particular manager named Katie! I didn't see any difference in customer rewards/amenities for being an IHG Rewads Club Member., nothing extra was offered by the hotel. No late checkout.

    Pros:
The outside grounds are clean and well maintained. Parking is a little tight/cramped, but manageable. Each room has a bag of popcorn and a DVD Player, which is a nice bonus. There is a great selection of DVDs, more adult choices than kid/family choices, but the kid selection is still decent. The room was pretty much immaculate. There were a foul smell (not smoke, something else) in the room and the bathroom linen was dingy, but other than that the room was very clean. I did not use the dishwasher or kitchen supplies. The room was very quiet. We were on the bottom floor, but it was a quiet room, I was pleasantly surprised. The bed was pretty firm, and the pillows were standard firm. It was a good nights sleep. The manager David was very nice, polite and helpful.

    Cons:
Upon arriving we checked in and went to our room. Check in was quick and easy. When checking in you have to sign a waiver that says you will not smoke in your room or use drugs. The only issue I have with the waiver is that it adds an extra $27.58 hold to your debit card (which is not stated when you book the room online). The form you sign says that a $20.00 hold will be placed on you card. It wasn't until I checked my debit card that I saw a separate additional charge of $7.58. This was upsetting to me, especially because as a single parent, having nearly $30.00 unavailable to me without prior notice, especially on my debit card, a lot. The manager Katie did not say anything about the extra charge being charged to my card. This is something that could possibly overdraw a person's bank account and should be corrected immediately.

Due to traffic, we arrived to the hotel later than expected and did not have time to relax before leaving for the concert. When I entered the room I noticed a foul smell. We changed our, needing to leave quickly, and went back to the front desk to alert them to the foul smell in my room. When I told the manager Katie that the room smelled foul and asked her if there was air fresher or something they could put in the room, she told me to hold on, then came back and handed me a bottle of some type of chemical solution. I could not believe the manager was handing me the solution to go spray myself. She had no interest in going to see what the smell was, or taking the time to deodorize the room. To ask me, the customer, to fix a hotel error was completely inappropriate. I had my 6 year old son with me, so I politely told her that we were late for an event and I would have spray the room when I got back. Instead of her offering to take care of the problem herself, she just said okay and sat the bottle on the counter. The other manager David stepped in and offered to spray the room for me. I thanked him and we left. Upon returning, David let me know that he sprayed the room for me, and told me to let him know if everything was okay. When we entered our room, the smell was a little strong, very citric, but way better than how it smelled before. We came back out to the lobby to rent a DVD and David asked us was the room smell better. I told him yes, and thank you, and asked about checking out a couple of DVDs.

David said he did not have a printed list, and asked me what I was looking for. The other manager Katie said she would print a list for him. While Katie was working on printing a list, David read through and suggested some DVDs for my son and I to watch. After Katie printed the list, David gave her praise for doing so, but her response was horrible. She replied, " I'm the s***"! I was floored! I wanted to say something to her, I could not believe she had just cursed in front of my 6 year old child, and nonchalantly at that. Not wanting to call attention to her inappropriate words, I didn't say anything. After signing for the DVD rental we went back to our room and watched movies.

The next morning, when we went to check out, there was another customer at the front desk and it appeared that some type of altercation happened between another guest and the managers Katie and David. While David was very polite to my son and I, he did seem agitated with the male guest and made several remarks to him about not letting anyone talk to him in that manner. I did not see what transpired prior, but I could tell something happened. David did not seem as if he was being rude or loud, but did seem defensive. When he saw that my son was around, he spoke in an even lower tone to the male guest (it appeared that a female companion of the male guest at the checkout desk was verbally aggressive with the manager David). I did not see the female guest, but this is what was said in front of me. There were 2 other female employees standing behind the counter. All in all and uncomfortable situation for me with a small child. We were quickly shooed away, Katie told me to sign my receipt and that was it. Katie seemed very frazzled. After I handed her the receipt back and the return slip for my DVD rentals, she said nothing. I had to ask if that was all I needed to do. My son had candy he wanted to buy, because of the altercation ensuing, one of the female employees told my son ,just take it sweetie". When we walked outside, David was outside. He did thank us for staying and told my son goodbye. Although he seemed agitated before, his interaction with my son was calm, polite and playful. I appreciated the fact that he regrouped to wish us well and interact with my son in a positive way. Again, I do not know what happened with the other guest, but David was polite to us. The situation at check out was uncomfortable, but even with that, Katie seemed rude and was not helpful. There was absolutely no concern for the quality of our stay on her behalf.

Our interactions with staff were brief because we were gone most of the day, but after seeing how various issues were handled, I'm glad we were not in the hotel much. I did not feel comfortable addressing the managers about any further issues with my stay. I was worried that it may turn aggressive. I trusted this hotel because of other hotels in the IHG chain I've stayed in. As a single mom, t means a lot to me that I have an enjoyable stay. I only get 1 chance a year to take my son somewhere, and it's usually only a 1 or 2 day trip. The hotel stay really out a sour note on our trip. I would like to say I would give this hotel another try, but with Katie there, I definitely would not come back. She either needs more training or something. I think David could benefit from some as well. As nice and sweet as he was, the professionalism is still something I think can be improved. Katie was just flat out rude, in my opinion.

Need to correct the salt and pepper shaker issue. Can't get either out of the containers. Also, coffee in the breakfast room way way way too strong. Tastes like asphalt!
