See contemporary artworks from the UK and abroad at the Tetley, an eye-catching art deco building and the former headquarters of a local brewery. There's also a fascinating permanent collection tracing the company's history, with vintage pub signs, machinery and commemorative beers. Thirsty work? Enjoy a pint on the sun-trap terrace afterwards. The gallery is 20 minutes' walk from the hotel.
The history of medicine from the Victorian age to the present is illuminated at the Thackray Medical Museum, two miles from our hotel. You can discover 50,000 medical instruments, as well as notable artefacts such as Prince Albert's personal medicine chest, and Hitler's blood transfusion set. Public lectures on a range of health-related topics are offered on Saturdays from October to March.
The atmosphere at Headingley Carnegie Stadium is even more electric with the addition of floodlights for night games. They're mounted in frames shaped like white Yorkshire roses, so Twenty20 cricket fans won't miss a single catch. If there's no match during your visit, try the behind-the-scenes tour, which takes in a museum of memorabilia, the players' training area and even the commentary boxes.
Don't Go Home Without
At Tropical World, five miles from the hotel in Roundhay Park, the meerkats are back on display after a cheeky escape attempt was thwarted. You can watch their antics from a viewing enclosure, or even sponsor one through the Adopt-a-Meerkat programme. Make sure you also check out the tropical greenhouses, butterflies and terrapins.
If you're walking through Leeds Train Station, half a mile from the hotel, keep an eye out for the kaleidoscopic artwork by Rob Lowe on the bridge overlooking the main entrance. This eye-catching vinyl display is just one of many public artworks that can be seen around the city, from sculptures to graffiti murals. The University of Leeds' Campus Art Trail guide can help you track them down.
