Chartwell House, 30 minutes' drive from the hotel, was once the family home of Winston Churchill. It's also thought that Henry VIII stayed here while courting Anne Boleyn, who lived nearby. Now maintained by the National Trust, the house contains a permanent collection of books, furniture and other mementos of the Churchill family. Extensive hillside gardens feature lakes and charming woodland.

You can enjoy stunning views as far as the Isle of Wight from the circular glass viewing pod of the British Airways i360 in Brighton, 50 minutes by car from the hotel. The i360 was designed by the architects behind the London Eye, and at 138 metres, is the world's tallest moving observation tower. Up to 200 visitors at a time can take a ride on this, one of the area's newest attractions.

Thanks to the rescue efforts of a local farmer, you'll see a number of different sheep wandering around when you take the pretty Lake Walk at Hever Castle, 25 minutes' drive from the hotel. Suffolks, zwartbles, texels and mules are just a few of the breeds nibbling at the grass here. The grounds of the 13th-century country estate, once home to Anne Boleyn, also feature ducks and beautiful swans.

Create family memories to treasure at Chessington World of Adventures resort, a 50-minute drive from the hotel. You'll find plenty of thrill-seeking and kid-friendly rides, plus regular shows. A zoo and a SEA LIFE centre offer over 1,000 animals including lions, tigers and pandas. Meanwhile, you can let the tiny Tarzans in your family swing through the trees on the few Go Ape High Ropes courses.

Royal Tunbridge Wells, half an hour's drive from the hotel, is one of the "Seven Wonders of the Weald". The other six, Chiddingstone Castle, Biddenden Vineyard, Groombridge Place, Hole Park, Scotney Castle and the Kent & East Sussex Railway, are regarded as some of the High Weald area's finest attractions. They're all within a short drive of each other, so you can see several in one day.

The Bluebell Railway

The Bluebell Railway is a heritage line running for 11 mi (17.7 km) along the border between East and West Sussex, England, run by the Bluebell Railway Preservation Society. It uses steam trains which operate between Sheffield Park and East Grinstead, with intermediate stations at Horsted Keynes & Kingscote.

The rooms remain much as they were when he lived here, with pictures, books and personal momentos' evoking the career and wide-ranging interests of a great statesman, writer, painter and family man. Additionally, every winter we put on a new temporary exhibition to explore Churchill in more detail and draw items out of storage.

Outside, Mrs Beales passion for gardening inspires a major restoration of her 12-acre hillside garden.
