City Guide—Macau

Travel in Macau – City Guide

The beautiful Macau is a flourishing and gorgeous city that never sleeps, with a global culture that blooms like a floral display. The tranquil Ruins of St. Paul’s and the bustling Casino at Venetian Macau mirror each other, the soaring Macau Tower and Rua do Cunha with their multitudes of Chinese and western restaurants complement each other, while the worldwide boutique stores are scattered in between, and global specialty foods abound. You may be surprised to find an oriental ambiance intertwined with western romanticism, while your senses bounce between the past and the future, as the fashion is seamlessly integrated into traditional culture. Macau thus offers tourists a unique travel experience — with every step comes the opportunity for an extraordinary journey.

Luxury City of Entertainment

Macau consists of Macau Peninsula, Taipa, Coloane, and Cotai. The bountiful land is replete with bustling scenes and grand views. Macau Peninsula boasts numerous places of interest as well as unique landscapes, with Taipa to the south of Macau Peninsula, where new and old landmarks can be found adjacent to each other; the sea-reclamation miracle, Cotai, hosts upscale casinos filled with entertainment extravaganzas; and Coloane, with its charming scenery, is a leisure and recreational resort.

Don’t Miss the Following Macau Destinations

The Ruins of St. Paul’s, located at the foot of Fortress Hill, refers to the facade ruins of the Church of St. Paul. As one of the “Eight Views of Macau” and incorporating renaissance and oriental architectural styles, the ruins, with their cross sitting atop the memorial gate and the statue of the Christ child with the Madonna under a copper dove, are all indeed like an amazing Bible come to life.

Macau Museum features Macau's contemporary characteristics, and is thus a great way to get closer to Macau. You can enter via the Monte Forte site and look out over Macau's historical changes, listen to vendors’ hawking as though straight out of ancient times, and personally visit the faux hospital and herbal tea shop, among other colorful experiences. And on the way out there is an even more amazing experience, a place where you can overlook the old area of the city, with everything visible in a mere glance.

The sky-high Macau Tower reaches an astonishing height of 338 meters. Ascending to the sightseeing corridor for a stroll in the clouds, you will have a panoramic view of Macau and Zhuhai stretching out before you. Here, you can also try bungee jumping, dropping down from a height of 233 meters and falling at a speed of 75 km/h for 20 seconds — this is truly a unique, exciting and breathtaking experience.

A-Ma Temple, as the origin of the name of Macau, is another destination that you should not miss. The ancient temple was built more than 400 years ago to commemorate the guardian goddess of the sea. With a mountain as a backdrop and facing the sea, it was built by the cliff with towering ancient trees all around; indeed, the temple boasts of stunning scenery. Every Lunar New Year's Eve and lunar March 23, pilgrims from near and far gather to worship and pray, giving rise to a waft of purple incense smoke. This is where one of the “Eight Views of Macau” — the rarely seen “purple smoke with Ma Kok” — originates from.

Travel Tips

Macau’s free tour bus, which can be found at major terminals and gateways, is now the preferred means of transport for tourists in Macau. For example, as you start off from such places as the Holiday Inn Macau Cotai Central, you can just take the Cotai bus to start off your wonderful journey whenever you want. The Fisherman's Wharf close by incorporates various architectural styles, such as that of the Chinese Tang Dynasty, a European style and Latin charm, in which you may feel as if on a tour around the world.

Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), with its lush greenery and beautiful flowers, is located in Taipa. Due to affection for Portuguese culture, the buildings, generally of light pink and light green colors, especially feature a certain romantic beauty. The strong cultural atmosphere, together with the Michelin restaurant hidden deep inside, will make your visit very much worthwhile.

Macau, the prestigious "Las Vegas of the East", is famous for its gambling industry. In the "gold-eating cave", you can enjoy the unrestrained excitement of high-stakes gambling, lazily enjoy the world-class luxury services, or just set about discovering the countless new experiences that await you.

Stay in Macau – What You Think is What You Get

The Macau hospitality industry is a global leader, with luxury hotels by the row, especially in Cotai. Here lies a superb collection of aircraft carrier-sized luxury hotels, super large resort hotels, countless dazzling performances, and fantastic experiences – all presenting refreshing new possibilities to the world's hotel industry.

If you would like to witness the tradition and history of Macau, the main residential area, Macau Peninsula, is the best choice. Go to the Sun Yat-sen Memorial House to get a feel for the revolutionary martyrs, or go to Travessa do Armazém Velho to buy some exquisite souvenirs, or just stay in the hotel and enjoy the elegant views of the South China Sea. All are charming and unique experiences. Moreover, you could go for something different at the Crowne Plaza Macau, which boasts an unbeatable sea view. There, you can spend some time with your family in comfort, feasting on delicacies from around the world while served by the sea that lies before you.

For travelling urban upstarts, a hotel in the bustling business center must certainly be the best choice. In addition to the convenient transportation links, the Macau Holiday Inn, for example, is one offering all-around services in terms of guest rooms, venues, etc., ensuring your stay is both convenient and exciting.

Shopping in Macau - Every Wish Come True

As a world-class hotel destination, Macau will grant you a convenient shopping experience. Here, you can find just about anything in shopping malls that lie right beside your hotel, be it a global luxury brand or a novel item from Hong Kong, Taiwan or the Chinese mainland.

At the widely known Grand Canal Shops, you can also admire a Venetian view after shopping.

One Central Macau enjoys charming natural scenery that includes the sea, two lakes and three bridges. It is also a top-class paradise for domestic and foreign shoppers. All the high-end shopping experience of a global city can be found here under the one roof. With exquisite and elegant store windows that shine brightly, peppered with colorful cross-discipline activities featuring collaborations between the fashion and art worlds, the mall strives to fill you with new feelings every time you shop here.

Rua do Cunha is a popular shopping destination for locals, as well as being a famous street for souvenirs in Macau. Numerous restaurants, dessert stores and souvenir shops are gathered along the 115-meter-long and 5-meter-wide street. The most popular ones must be the time-honored bakeries, including Koi Kei Bakery, Choi Heong Yuen, and Pastelaria Fong Kei. There, you can find almond cake, phoenix roll, nougat, ginger candy, sweetheart cake, sliced meat-stuffing biscuit chicken biscuit, niuerduo biscuit, and everything you could wish for.

Food in Macau – Treat Yourself to Delicacies

As Macau is inclusive of global cultures, so it is with its selection of global cuisines, with everything from Portuguese food to Michelin restaurants, from Cantonese snacks to local delicacies, and from select Chinese cuisine to exquisite Western food. In little Macau with its 19 Michelin restaurants, delicious food can be found everywhere. Any hotel could be hosted by a famous chef, while masters of varied cuisines are never far away; even a hotel resort's restaurant is still worth a gourmet’s time.

Furthermore, the local specialties on the streets of Macau are not to be missed. More than that even, some believe the Portuguese-style tarts and pork chop buns in the little stores to be the very soul of the city.

Nighttime in Macau - Free and Unrestrained

As night falls, the thing to do is to take a stroll through the streets and alleys among the Portuguese-style buildings, take some pictures, and drink a cup of coffee. Isn’t life such a great pleasure?

In the Hong Kong movies, the gangster boss would often gamble in Macau for the whole night through to early morning. Then, he would go to a familiar neighborhood cookshop and order a bowl of crab porridge in which the crab cream melts away. While feasting on the golden-colored dish with its gentle taste, he must have felt total release and complete satisfaction in that moment. You should really go on an adventure and look to recreate this scene from the silver screen!

Colorful Macau and Its Cultural Diversity

The residents of Macau need not travel to any faraway land for cultural riches, as they live in one with several world heritage sites. Each era has left its mark, and the culture of Macau is well preserved and passed on through its cultural and historical traditions.

The Kun Iam Tong Temple, built in the late Ming Dynasty, is towering and occupies vast lands, while having a history that spans more than 360 years. The Tam Kung Temple, built in the reign of Emperor Tongzhi during the Qing Dynasty, is the most famous Taoist temple in Coloane, and the most used for worship.

St. Dominic's Church abounds with interesting oil paintings and statues, among which the most famous is the statue of Jesus Christ. Here, you can have a glimpse of the features and style of ancient Spanish religious art.

How to Get There

There is one airport, one passenger station and three ferry terminals in Macau. Macau International Airport, built entirely on reclaimed land, is located at Taipa, where domestic and foreign flights land. Meanwhile, the airport is also the main passenger hub for travelling across the country.

The ferry is also the main means of entry to the city, and includes the ferry terminal and the Turbo Jet. The Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal is located on Macau Peninsula. It is an entry and exit port. The Turbo Jet provides 24-hour convenient navigation services between Hong Kong and Macau.

A romantic dinner served alongside the beautiful scenery, or a windswept stroll along the graceful coastline, or an unfettered game of chance at the gaming tables. The unexpected Macau is always resplendent with intoxicating splendors awaiting your arrival.
