Visiting Aylesbury – A Guide

Aylesbury is a market town close to the gentle hills of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, an hour from London by train and surrounded by rolling farmland.

Historic buildings like the 19th-century Corn Exchange surround its cobbled Market Square. The old town is home to Tudor and Georgian buildings and 13th-century St. Mary’s church. There’s also a modern shopping centre and two flourishing theatres.

London Heathrow Airport (LHR) and London Luton Airport (LTN) are both around 45 minutes’ drive away.

Aylesbury: town layout

Market Square has been the town’s focal point since Anglo-Saxon times. A neo-Gothic clock tower stands here, close to a statue of local hero and English Civil War leader, John Hampden.

South of the centre is the Bucks County Museum, home to the Roald Dahl Children's' Gallery.

West of town, the Rothschild family’s Waddesdon Manor is surrounded by formal gardens and filled with works of art.

Eating Out in Aylesbury

Aylesbury is surrounded by farms, so you'll find locally-sourced produce in town-centre eateries and village gastropubs all around Buckinghamshire.

Historically, the town was famous for its plump white ducks. Richard Waller maintains the tradition at Aylesbury Duck Farm, supplying tender meat to local restaurants.

Nearby Terrick is renowned for Terrick beef, and home to craft beermaker Chiltern Brewery, which also makes Terrick Truckle cheese.

Nearby Hale Valley Vineyard makes dry white wines from grapes grown on chalky Chilterns soil.

The chef recommends...

  • Roast Terrick beef and a pint of Chiltern Brewery ale at the King's Head Inn.
  • A tutored wine tasting at Waddesdon Manor's Wine Cellars, where a treasury of Bordeaux vintages celebrates the Rothschilds’ wine-making history.
  • Tender Aylesbury duck and Norfolk goose from Aylesbury Duck Farm.

Gym is small and cosy but all works well. Pool area very good [Less]

Overall the hotel although a bit tired feels a bit more homely than many others in the area. The furniture is dated, certain rooms can be noisy (sounding like a noisy boiler above the [More] ceiling). However whilst there are clear areas for improvement, this will currently not stop me returning when staying in the area. The front of house staff are always helpful and room service always arrives at the requested time. [Less]
Improve bar service
By Frank4kb
Staff were discussing their own internal issues in front of guests and leaving guests waiting for service. Bar staff showed little customer facing ability. Whilst there was butter, jam, honey etc etc [More] next to the bread board. There was no bread available or on display. When I asked a member of staff, they referred me to the bread by the toast machine that is for toast. I pointed this out to them and they said it was a due to a new chef so would be resolved in near future. However that is what they said three visits ago. ? [Less]
One night family visit
By Sue and Ian
We have stayed at this hotel before as it is convenient for visiting family. Overall the hotel is excellent and prices are reasonable if you book in advance. Our room looked like it had been [More] modernised and was decorated in a modern contemporary style. We booked a stay which included dinner bed and breakfast. Only disappointment was evening meal as our package severely restricted what we could have from menu without paying extra and choices overall were not inspiring. Breakfast was good and only spoiled by a dead bird on outside patio, we pointed it out to staff who did seem concerned and promised to clear up the mess. [Less]
