Austin Travel Guide

Deep in the heart of Texas, Austin offers the perfect getaway for the free-spirited traveler within us all. Nicknamed the “live music capital of the world,” visitors are surrounded by soulful sounds and the city’s sense of community upon arrival. The eclectic culture of the city provides endless opportunities to explore, from historic tours, art galleries, and top of the line restaurants. Austin is becoming one of the most popular travel destinations in the United States, catering to tourists of many interests. Whatever your preferred taste, IHG has many Austin hotels to ensure your stay is everything out of the ordinary.

Things to See

Austin offers a wide variety of adventures, from embracing the outdoors to perusing more urban areas. You can take a trip to any of the beautiful lakes, such as Lake Austin and Lake Travis, and spend the day paddle boarding or hiking along trails, take a walk down 6th Street and listen to the live music pouring into the streets, or spend your day scouting out vintage shops and art galleries around South Lamar. If you want to learn a little bit about the city’s history, stop by the LBJ Library and Museum to learn about Lyndon Baines Johnson, the Texas native who served as the 36th President of the United States or the Texas State Capitol. Experience how Austin earned its musical reputation by visiting the live music haunts along Red River Street and South Congress, the city’s entertainment district, also home to the legendary Broken Spoke dancehall and the Continental Club. You can even plan your trip during Austin’s two biggest music festivals, Austin City Limits in early fall and South by Southwest (commonly known as SXSW) in the spring.

Hotels in Austin

Whether you plan to stay downtown in the midst of the music and food scene or in eclectic areas like East Austin, you'll find a wide range of options with IHG. From boutique offerings and luxurious historic hotels to family-friendly alternatives, consider yourself covered. With a variety of room types and amenities, finding a location and style suitable for the activities you have planned for your trip is simple.

Where to Stay

Great hotels in Austin for business travelers are typically found downtown. This puts you just blocks from the Austin Convention Center and conveniently close to both the financial and entertainment districts.  Popular event spaces like the Texas State Capitol, University of Texas campus, Darrell K. Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium, LBJ Presidential Library and Bass Concert Hall are close to downtown as well.  South Congress and South Lamar are known for their eccentric atmosphere, personalities and experiences, including street art, vintage clothing stores, and eclectic bars. Hancock, where a majority of the students of the University of Texas live, is much more residential and just a quick drive to downtown.

How to Get to Austin

The Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is the most convenient option for flying into Austin. The airport offers cab services and car rentals on-site so you can easily get around the area. The Capital Metro Bus Line and the MetroRail are your two options for public transportation, each offering affordable prices and the convenience of multiple routes to get you to and from your destinations. Bike rental services such as Austin B-cycle, Mellow Johnny’s Austin Bike Tours & Rentals, Mile’s Bikes and Tours, or Streamline Cycles, and local pedicabs offer a greener option for getting around town and seeing the city at a more leisurely pace.

Top Notch Stay!
By Rubellion
I spend many nights in hotels while traveling for business, but I hadn't yet stayed in a Staybridge Suites. I'm so glad we booked this hotel while we were in town for a UT graduation party! We were [More] only here for one night, so we didn't get to use the perfect little kitchen in the room, except for the ice maker in the fridge. Since the ice wasn't ready yet, the front desk provided us ice that was the same as Sonic® - pretty nice! The kitchen also had a 2-burner stove, sink with disposal, microwave, coffee maker, and real dishes (and an all-important corkscrew RIGHT IN THE ROOM :-)) The grounds, trees and different elevations that follow the natural lay of the land made it feel like this hotel had been there for many years, though it's quite new. We ended up staying an additional night in a different Staybridge Suites since this one was full by the time we decided. The other one was almost as nice, but didn't have the natural beauty and convenience of this location. We will come back soon! [Less]
UIL State Golf

Comfortable bed, clean room. Enjoyed the hospitality hour and the breakfast. There was a slight snafu at the last moment and Amy took care of the situation for us. Front desk staff very helpful [More] and kind. [Less]
hidden treasure
By NANA1
The experience was a hidden treasure, very restful and quiet. Away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Austin, but close enough to enjoy. [Less]
Still learning
By Guzinator
This is a decent new property in a great location. Seems the staff needs further training overall as their knowledge of hotel was minimal, including many people I asked questions of. Although a new [More] property the pool deck look trashed so the pool was closed. Not bad , not great - but ok overall, [Less]
Great downtown location
By Amber
The hotel was great and comfortable. Only 2 downsides: no hot tub and listening to live music from the venue on River Street. I love live music and that was the purpose of my trip but it's great [More] not when you want to sleep. I never heard anyone from the surrounding rooms so the noise insulation is great on the inside. So if you are super sensitive to noise, just ask for a room away from River Street. [Less]
Great Downtown Hotel

Very Comfortable Room - Have Your Vehicle Stay Elsewhere
By KMcCoy
This hotel is nice. The rooms are a good size and comfortable. If travelling with a group, there is enough space for others to stop by. As for the area, this a nice spot if you plan to visit the bar [More] areas. It's right next to Paramount Theatre. It's a little far from retail and park areas. The one thing that angers me even though I know before I get there - parking cost. Parking continues to go up here. It is now at $40 or $45 for an oversize vehicle, essentially SUV or truck. I expect it to get worse with another hotel being built across. To avoid some of the anger, I normally park at one of two other hotels with on-site parking. Both are within walking distance, but a cab would between would still be cheaper if you are not planning on in-and-out use. [Less]
Intercontinental Austin
By Bubblesbet
The location of the hotel is great. The staff is really nice. We got a couple great detailed recommendations from concierge for good bbq spots. Check in and check out were easy and smooth. Parking [More] prices are ridiculous though. We found street parking every night so we saved a lot that way. [Less]
