Austin Travel Guide

Deep in the heart of Texas, Austin offers the perfect getaway for the free-spirited traveler within us all. Nicknamed the “live music capital of the world,” visitors are surrounded by soulful sounds and the city’s sense of community upon arrival. The eclectic culture of the city provides endless opportunities to explore, from historic tours, art galleries, and top of the line restaurants. Austin is becoming one of the most popular travel destinations in the United States, catering to tourists of many interests. Whatever your preferred taste, IHG has many Austin hotels to ensure your stay is everything out of the ordinary.

Things to See

Austin offers a wide variety of adventures, from embracing the outdoors to perusing more urban areas. You can take a trip to any of the beautiful lakes, such as Lake Austin and Lake Travis, and spend the day paddle boarding or hiking along trails, take a walk down 6th Street and listen to the live music pouring into the streets, or spend your day scouting out vintage shops and art galleries around South Lamar. If you want to learn a little bit about the city’s history, stop by the LBJ Library and Museum to learn about Lyndon Baines Johnson, the Texas native who served as the 36th President of the United States or the Texas State Capitol. Experience how Austin earned its musical reputation by visiting the live music haunts along Red River Street and South Congress, the city’s entertainment district, also home to the legendary Broken Spoke dancehall and the Continental Club. You can even plan your trip during Austin’s two biggest music festivals, Austin City Limits in early fall and South by Southwest (commonly known as SXSW) in the spring.

Hotels in Austin

Whether you plan to stay downtown in the midst of the music and food scene or in eclectic areas like East Austin, you'll find a wide range of options with IHG. From boutique offerings and luxurious historic hotels to family-friendly alternatives, consider yourself covered. With a variety of room types and amenities, finding a location and style suitable for the activities you have planned for your trip is simple.

Where to Stay

Great hotels in Austin for business travelers are typically found downtown. This puts you just blocks from the Austin Convention Center and conveniently close to both the financial and entertainment districts.  Popular event spaces like the Texas State Capitol, University of Texas campus, Darrell K. Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium, LBJ Presidential Library and Bass Concert Hall are close to downtown as well.  South Congress and South Lamar are known for their eccentric atmosphere, personalities and experiences, including street art, vintage clothing stores, and eclectic bars. Hancock, where a majority of the students of the University of Texas live, is much more residential and just a quick drive to downtown.

How to Get to Austin

The Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is the most convenient option for flying into Austin. The airport offers cab services and car rentals on-site so you can easily get around the area. The Capital Metro Bus Line and the MetroRail are your two options for public transportation, each offering affordable prices and the convenience of multiple routes to get you to and from your destinations. Bike rental services such as Austin B-cycle, Mellow Johnny’s Austin Bike Tours & Rentals, Mile’s Bikes and Tours, or Streamline Cycles, and local pedicabs offer a greener option for getting around town and seeing the city at a more leisurely pace.

The ease of reserving online at the last minute, to the front desk calling to confirm reservation, checking in and the check out was smooth. The front desk was super helpful and nice. There was no [More] rudeness at all and this is most appreciated. The ladies at check out were funny and nice and this truly was a great experience for me and my family. We love staying at Candlewood suites!! [Less]

Round Rock Holiday Inn

It was a great hotel, very clean and new. The staff was extremely friendly, the rooms were fresh, they had lemon water in the lobby. The breakfast was run of the mill, nothing exciting except the [More] Chobani yogurt. The only thing that is realistic that the hotel could do to be any better, would be adding a swimming pool. Our recent stay during our Spring Break. We like the hotel location; it is easy to get onto 45/35/toll road 1. Eating places next door, across the freeway and down the freeway.......Friendly staff [More] and clean room. [Less]

In town to see Penn and Teller at the Paramount Theater next door to the hotel. Teller was hanging out In the lobby when we checked in. Parking is valet only and expensive in my opinion, found a [More] good parking garage 1/2 block away so this was not an issue. [Less]

Between the heavenly bed, blackout curtains as high quality as Vegas, and the location.. This place was a dream. The clientele and staff were all so polite and a pleasure to stay with. On a scale of [More] 1-10: This one goes to eleven. It was the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of SXSW to rest and recuperate [Less]
Wonderful relaxing vacation
By writer1977
From the moment the valet took my keys, our stay at the Stephen F was wonderful. The front desk staff was courteous and the valet was polite and accommodating. We had reserved a room with a single [More] queen, and while it was a tad bit small, it was well furnished and decorated and very clean, and the view of downtown Austin was amazing. We were close to all the shops and restaurants, a block from 6th Street and SXSW was just wrapping up, but it wasn't as noisy as one might think, even with construction across the street. Checkout was easy, and there were no surprise charges on our bill. The staff remained courteous even as we left. We will definitely return and stay at that hotel again to experience more of what Austin has to offer. [Less]
