Over the last few years we've visited Orangeburg regularly. It's given us a chance to sample all of the major hotels. In doing so I have to say IHG stands out.
We stayed in the two room
handicapped suite. It was clean comfortable and well appointed. Although we were only there for one night I can say it would have been comfortable for a much longer stay.
A few things on the accessibility. While it exceeds most in the area, there was still room for improvement. The closet is open making it easy to reach into, however if you are in a chair there is no reaching the bar. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I could not only use the sink without straining, but I could see myself in the mirror from my wheelchair. The shower was typical, it has a fold down seat at the opposite end of the tub from the shower head. The way the seat fits the tub makes it impossible to close the curtain completely, therefore the floor gets flooded. The water from the shower doesn't reach you properly either, so you feel like a bird in a shallow dish. That's not the fault of the hotel. It would be nice if hotel designers would figure out this doesn't work, but they all do it. Outside that the bathroom is spacious, extremely clean and has plenty of safety features including a phone.
The beds are easily the most comfortable hotel beds I've ever slept in. That's in 30 states and three countries. To the management. They are really tall, for someone in a chair that makes transfer difficult. You may want to consider a short box spring for the handicap rooms. Even so I will happily stay here again. There was even space for my service dog between the two beds.
I didn't have the chance to use the amenities. Breakfast was your usual eggs, bacon, etc. Though they do have Cinnabon rolls so, yep yep. The coffee was better than most. The staff was friendly and helpful. All in I will stay here again. [Less]
