As the birthplace of Samuel Crompton, Bolton is proud of the places that give testament to this English inventor's origins. You can wander through the rooms of Hall i' th' Wood Museum, where Crompton and his family were tenants. It dates back to the 16th century and is furnished with pieces from two succeeding centuries. You can also walk the Crompton Trail, guiding you to significant tributes.

Rivington Pike, known for its breathtaking views along the West Pennine Moors, is only about 30 minutes by car from the hotel. You can walk, or bike if you prefer, along sprawling green pillows of grass. Climb the tower for a spectacular view of the surrounds – as far as the Lake District mountains and the Isle of Man in crisp weather. You may stumble on a music festival or event there, too.

Visitors to Bolton shouldn't miss House of Raja's, an Asian superstore selling colourful saris, cookware and exotic goods, less than 10 minutes' drive from the hotel. Welcoming staff can help you find a perfect sari for you or a loved one, and you can go home with your spice collection replenished. You can also find jewellery, and if you're hungry, stop for an authentic Indian lunch.

Bolton has a long industrial heritage of coal and cotton, railroads and canals, and you can walk a trail dedicated to this history. The path takes you on a pleasant walk around town, past some important industrial architecture. Not only will you learn more about figures like soap magnate Lord Leverhulme and spinning pioneer Samuel Crompton, you'll also be getting a good dose of fresh air.
