Seven miles from the hotel, you can explore the greenhouses of Roundhay Park's Tropical World, and discover meerkats, terrapins and crocodiles amid exotic plants from across the world. Don't miss the Butterfly House, and try to spot the keepers in wetsuits who clean the Amazon fish tank from the inside. Take a break and look out over the park's landscaped Canal Garden from the Tropical World Café.

Twenty minutes' drive from the hotel, at the free Leeds City Museum, you can discover fascinating artifacts from all over the world. Look out for the Egyptian mummy of Nesyamun, resident since the 19th century, and a Roman mosaic floor from 250 BC. You can't leave before you see the famous Leeds Tiger, a taxidermy specimen from India that has become notoriously saggy over the past century.

The Royal Armouries Museum, only six miles from the hotel in Leeds city centre, displays a huge collection of weapons and armour from many different cultures. You can see engraved swords from India and Japan in the Oriental Gallery, a towering display in the skylit central showpiece, the Hall of Steel, and live jousting in the Tiltyard. Trigger-happy kids can test their aim at the Crossbow Range.

The hotel is only an hour's drive from the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors national parks. You can get some serious exercise and plenty of peace and quiet on hiking and cycling trails such as the Dales' Pennine Way or the Moors' Cleveland Way. Many routes pass through countryside villages, giving you the chance to stop off for a picnic or head to the local pub for a pint and a reviving lunch.
