My company's Shanghai office is locating in Jiading District, making Nanxiang a convenient alternative to downtown hotels. This is the first Western international brand hotel to open in the town. I was told it opened 1st Feb 2015.
LOCATION : 10 minute walk from Line 11 Metro station and shopping mall. Here you can find Starbucks, Pizza Hut, McD's, City Shop, and a dozen + local restaurants. Be prepared to wait to get a taxi from the hotel, esp if raining.
CHECK-IN : The staff spoke limited but sufficient English. I was not immediately recognized as a Platinum member, but I was given an upgrade to a suite after asking. More on that later. Biggest problem was that the hotel was not yet set up for on-line "Foreigner Registration" with the Police. This process, standard in China, is normally transparent for foreigners, but in this case they wanted to take my passport and return it the next day. I was able to show the registration I already had (thanks to having a Nanxiang apartment for the last year) to keep them happy.
ROOM : As mentioned, upgrade to 1-bed suite, room 1730. Two bathrooms, 2 TV's, sofa, everything new & beautiful. Nice touch was the bay window with seat in each room. Wall mounted USB & HDMI connection to large TV. At the time of my visit, no international TV channels were available. Tea, coffee & kettle provided. Bottled water each day.
RESTAURANTS : The exec lounge has not yet opened. The main restaurant was very quiet at breakfast - I never saw more than 6 people. Standard Western + Chinese breakfast items. Dinner was busy, with many non-guests dining. There is also a Japanese restaurant on site, which I highly recommend. Good food, and very reasonable prices.
SUMMARY : I had the feeling I was one of the first Western guests, and so was treated very well. The staff greeted me by name, and went out of their way to help. That said, some areas do need to improve to be 'accepted' as a Western level hotel, especially the passport registration. I also had the problem of only lukewarm hot water on the last morning - the staff were very apologetic, and this could be just a teething problem. The occupancy rate must have been very low during my stay. I would definitely stay again, thanks to the new & clean condition, and the lack of other choices in the area.
