I stayed here on business and perhaps not fair to review based on a Sunday night stay before a flight to Shetland. After a drive from Edinburgh I was hungry and it was freezing outside so the hotel's
warm ambience and calmness was welcome. Check in staff were nice, warm, and efficient and got me going to my room quickly with no messing around. I decided to eat in the restaurant area of the big bar area and although served with efficiency, and I've mentioned this before, there's a certain arrogance in play here where I feel the restaurant staff see you as a bit of a pain and do everything else to look busy but forget that it's all about you, not them.
The food was lovely but miserly for the helping, and the menu was miserly in choice, but this may have been a Sunday night menu.
Most of the clients that visit this hotel are not monied business people but working folks who don't want to be looked down at and want to be acknowledged as paying guests, not as a distraction to their efforts to do everything around the restaurant and be too busy to really make a difference to your stay. I noticed this attitude on my second visit to this reasonably new hotel, but thought it would improve as staff settled in to their new place of work and would start to build a rapport with their visitors. No-one in the restaurant was nasty or unpleasant, just a blase' attitude that made me feel that they thought they were the important ones. The hotel will always be busy because it's actually a very good place to stay, lovely rooms, very clean and comfortable but I'm afraid, for me, the restaurant staff made this review say what it says.
