Crowne Plaza without all the Crowne Plaze experience.
By IHG-LoyalistAgain
The Good: • The lobby area is nice, as one would expect from a Crowne Plaza. • The breakfast in the Club Lounge is quite good and while the evening Hors D’Oeuvres leave a bit to be desired and [More] won’t be refreshed in the last hour of the 2-hour window, the extremely nice lady that works the Lounge during the evening post is amazing! Super-duper, over the top customer service! I only wish I’d have gotten her name before work called me away shortly after getting there. She is the model of what customer service is all about. The lady in the morning for breakfast was also very nice. • The water pressure in the shower is excellent (even thought the lavatory is extremely sLOW pressure). • My room, while relatively small was very clean and tidy. I found some lipstick stain on one of the pillow cases on my bed but the other 3 pillows were clean. I can imagine that lipstick doesn't always launder out very well and I felt there was no harm, no foul on that one. I mention it only because it stood out in an otherwise very clean room. • The bed, its sheets and spread were all very comfortable. The Neither Here Nor There... or Bad – depending on how you look at it: • I was on the 11th floor - a great place to hear all the planes leaving ATL and the all of highway traffic outside. That's to be expected though at an airport hotel, so I do understand that. I will say the nearby Holiday Inn College Park does have significantly better sound proofing but the rooms and common areas there are nowhere near as nice or as clean as this Crowne Plaza. • I did find it curious that the 'book' says the bed should have 7 pillows as part of the Crowne Plaza Sleep Advantage package... I don't know what happened to my other 3 pillows that were apparently missing - I only got 4. • LOL - This only struck me as funny, as I travel with my own pillow anyway. I use one of the hotel's as a knee pillow wherever I go but that's it. Honestly, I'd find 7 pillows on a bed pretty annoying as I wouldn't know what to do with all of them! Especially in a room this small with no storage area for them. LOL • There were 2 bottles of water (assumed complimentary) in the room and several packets of both regular and decaf coffee, and one packet of caffeinated (only) tea with an old school single cup coffee maker. That's the extent of the amenities, in total - unless you count soap, shampoo, and mouthwash; then ok - you get those too. • Even though the book in the room lists the typical Crowne Plaza "Sleep Advantage" package (Aromatherapy, mist spray, etc.), none of that was to be found anywhere in the room - and yes, I checked ALL the drawers in every piece of furniture. Not that I use that smelly stuff ever but I do enjoy the ear plugs and eye mask when provided. Which this property didn't provide or list either in their missing Sleep Advantage kit. • I walked down to the Club Lounge room at around 8:30pm to get a cup of coffee (Most CP Lounges keep coffee brewed and hot water for tea, and sometimes basic amenities are available throughout the day/night.) What I found was a room that, while open had nothing at all in it save for a few places to sit. So I went down to the first floor as I thought I'd seen a table with some water and other refreshments available there. I had but there was water but no coffee or tea. There were plenty of overpriced snack items that could be purchased, and the bar was a few steps away, where I suppose one could purchase coffee but I just went back to my room and brewed some from the packets available there. • The AC unit in the room, when running was quite smelly and musty – to the point of causing occasional sneezing. * The door to the room leaked a lot of light and noise from outside. • The bartender was an interesting individual. Polite when interfacing with customers but happy to simply stand behind the bar without doing so. He’d leave the bar often and go somewhere for extended amounts of time but we weren’t sure where. He was responsible for the whole floor out in front of the bar, and we thought he was servicing those customers but often times, he was nowhere to be found. While standing in his position behind the bar, he looked at me and my empty water and low beer glasses several times yet offered no attempt to refill them. Consistent with front desk experience, I suppose. The Ugly: • The fellow who checked me in (Sam) at the front desk was committed to doing and saying the bare minimum for a check-in experience. • He neglected to tell me ANYTHING about the property or amenities of the hotel. Not even where the elevators were to get to my room. However, he was quite committed to telling me the parking fee is $14 per day. And that I need to swipe my card for an amount that showed up on the swiper for literally SIX times as much as the parking fee - never telling me what that was for, as he didn't actually SAY I needed to swipe my card, he pointed to and tapped on the card swiper. When I asked what is this $80 swipe for, after a pregnant pause had passed, a lady who was also behind the front desk said "Incidentals; in case something happens to the room." Which bare minimum guy parroted "Incidentals..." as if it were his idea. LOL I guess they have lots of "somethings" happening to their rooms here? • Usually when a property wants an incidental deposit, they say as much to prepare you for it before loading up your credit card or pointing to and tapping on the card swiper. But all I got from bare minimum guy - the point and tap. • Note – Taking a slight break from the ugly.... To his credit, bare minimum guy did actually recognize my IHG Platinum Elite status... but the words were presented in a very apathetic 'just going through the motions' kind of way. Kinda like Alec Baldwin's SNL Donald Trump "appleogizing" or the real Donald offering a passing attempt at apologizing (LOL - sorry, I couldn't help that one. BUT it is actually an accurate analogy... just sayin'). • Being on the 11th floor, I had to guess if it was also the club lounge floor as “bare minimum guy” (see below...) told me nothing (at all, really) of the sort. Turns out it is. After searching for and finding the hotel's 'book' I learned the hours of the Club Lounge and what services were apparently offered. Not many, and the book wasn't entirely accurate about several things - this included. * On day 2, there was a strong and distinct smell of cigarette smoke in most of the 11th floor hallway for several hours. (strange and perhaps hard to enforce the no-smoking policy) The Conclusion: • Overall, this seems to be a Crowne Plaza that is missing many of the things that make up a Crowne Plaza. You know, like hospitable staff, "Sleep Advantage" amenities, a Club Lounge that offers anything at all beyond seating outside of breakfast and Hors D'Oeuvres service times. • Based on the price of parking (which the IHG reservation website did not make clear at all whether the price listed was for my total stay or per day), I figured the bar would likely be a per diem buster. My suspicions were confirmed when, like the parking - the restaurant & bar had expensive priced food and drink (apparently, we cannot list actual pricing data or put dollar signs in reviews at all or they get rejected. hmmm. Entrees were relatively small in size while expensive. It is a luxury brand and an airport property, so some inflation is to be expected. At the same time, there are better restaurants in the immediate area that are the same or less in pricing and better in food quality. • I'm not sure if I'll be back here or not. Maybe it was just an off day for customer service but for me it came up short for Crowne Plaza. The price would have to be less than the neighboring Holiday Inn and several other properties around before I'd consider it again, as those other places offer just a good a value. [Less]
