Went to Zapata after the Laredo Birding Festival since it is in close proximity to Salineno and Falcon State Park. Front desk staff tipped us off that Common Pauraques, which are night birds, could
be heard around sunset, behind the hotel. We missed the time frame due to dinner, but tried the next morning before dawn and were successful in hearing them and a pair of owls duetting.
Hotel was clean, had a good breakfast selection including fresh bananas and tangerines. Good mattress, quiet third floor room. Excellent value. I recommend a stay to anyone birding the Valley who wants an early start at the Zapata park by the library, or an early start at Salineno. We had a choice to make a run to Mission or McAllen for the night but Zapata had great birds without all the traffic. [Less]
