The Imperial Gardens, behind the Town Hall, a 15-minute walk from the hotel, are among the most scenic spots in Cheltenham. Come spring, around 25,000 neatly arranged bedding plants erupt into a sea of colour. Because of the gardens' central location, they are the vibrant backdrop for several popular events, from music, science and literature festivals, to a weekly art show during the summer.
Sandford Parks Lido, 10 minutes by car from the hotel, is one of Cheltenham's best-loved attractions, with a season that runs from spring to early autumn. Families love the children's pool and slides, while if you want to practise your stroke, dedicated lanes are provided.
Up to 25 percent discounts are available to hotel guests at restaurants in The Brewery complex opposite the Holiday Inn Express Cheltenham Town Centre. Cheltenham became known as a spa resort from the 18th century, and at the Pittville Pump Room, five minutes' drive from the hotel, you can taste the mineral water – it's not very nice, but it's supposedly medicinal. The building is a superb example of Regency architecture, and its Ionic columns, dome and ornate gardens are well worth a visit – perhaps during Cheltenham Music Festival.
Stuck for ideas on what to do in the evenings? The Everyman Theatre, the Bacon Theatre and the Cheltenham Playhouse are all within a 10-minute drive of the hotel, so when it comes to entertainment, you're spoilt for choice. Whether you want to see hit touring productions, song-and-dance extravaganzas, stand-up comedy or family-friendly pantomimes, the only difficult part is making a decision.
