Half an hour’s taxi ride from the hotel, the Hagia Sophia began life as the Roman Empire’s first Christian cathedral, completed in 537 AD. In the 15th century it became an Ottoman mosque and in 1935 it was opened as a museum. Gaze up at the soaring arch of its ornate Byzantine dome and marvel at intricate Christian frescoes and golden mosaics displayed alongside Islamic calligraphy panels.

Slimme tips

Istanbul is home to many majestic mosques, but before entering any of them, please be aware of the correct etiquette. Plan your visit outside of the 5 daily prayer times and ensure that you’re properly attired – this means both men and women covering their legs and shoulders. Women should also carry a scarf to cover their hair and all visitors must remove footwear before entering a mosque.
