More than a dozen institutions, devoted to everything from world cultures to cinema, line the Museum Embankment along the Main River. The highlight is the world-class Städel Museum, a pleasant 10-minute walk across the river from the hotel. Established in 1815, it showcases a broad sweep of European art, from medieval and Renaissance Old Master paintings to provocative contemporary installations.

With its curved glass facade, the 200-metre-high Main Tower ranks among a handful of Germany’s tallest skyscrapers. Whizz up to the exhilarating rooftop observation deck for amazing views. On a clear day, you are able to take in not only the entire city, but the surrounding mountains of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main region. To savour the view over a meal, book a table at the 53rd-floor restaurant.

Stroll around the Altstadt, less than a 15-minute walk from the hotel. The centrepiece is cobbled Römerberg square, with picturesque half-timbered buildings. It’s flanked by the 3-gabled city hall, dating from the 15th century, and Gothic Old Nikolai Church. Depending on your interests, explore the nearby Historical Museum or walk north to the pedestrian shopping strip of Zeil.
Ebbelwei, Apfelwein, Schoppe, Stöffsche; the local apple cider goes by many names, but whatever you call it, you must try it. Speciality pubs cluster in the Old Sachsenhausen district south of the river, where the Frankfurt speciality is served in traditional ribbed glasses. On weekends, travel on the Ebbelwei-Express, a funky 1970s sightseeing tram that serves cider and pretzels enroute.
