You can take a free hour-long tour of Exeter's grand, 12th-century cathedral, in the city centre three miles from the hotel. Look out for the 15th-century astronomical clock, and look up to admire the impressive Gothic vaulted ceiling. Book in advance to climb the North Tower for great views over the city. Afterwards you can stop in for afternoon tea with scones and cakes at the Cathedral Café.

Book in advance to explore the fascinating medieval passages beneath Exeter city centre, a vaulted subterranean network that brought clean water to the city during the 14th century. You'll get the chance to see a film and archaeological artefacts discovered beneath the city, before popping on a hard hat to go underground. School holidays are especially busy, so book early if you plan a visit.
