Just over a mile from the hotel, the vast New Wimbledon Theatre presents celebrity-filled pantomimes, musicals and ballet performances in its grand, Edwardian auditorium. Or you can book tickets for cutting-edge drama and comedy shows in the New Wimbledon Studio. If you're travelling with kids, the nearby Polka Theatre stages shows for under 13s and has a teddy bear museum, play areas and a café.

Three miles from the hotel, Buddhapadipa Temple was the first Buddhist temple in the UK and is home to a resident community of monks and nuns. You can explore the temple grounds to discover a pond, bridges and a red-and-gold roofed house. Inside the building are murals depicting the Buddha's life and well-known figures such as Mother Theresa and, curiously, former prime minister Margaret Thatcher.

It's well worth checking out Wimbledon Village, 15 minutes' drive from the hotel. Its charming, well-preserved streets are home to galleries, antiques shops, boutique fashion stores and cafés. On the edge of Wimbledon Common is 17th-century Southside House, where you can wander through lovely, well-tended gardens and discover period furniture, historical artefacts and a large art collection.

Stretch your legs with a stroll among the ponds and nature trails on Wimbledon Common, two miles from the hotel. Look out for the 19th-century Wimbledon Windmill, now a museum that's open from March to October, with working sails and exhibits on local history as well as windmill development and construction. If you're feeling fit, you can even climb the ladder to see inside the top of the tower.
