Pull on a safety helmet and head underground for a tour at the National Coal Mining Museum for England, a 30-minute drive from the hotel. In addition to viewing paintings and pictures that bring the industry to life, it is possible to listen to recordings of miners describing daily life in the coalfields. Or get active outdoors while exploring the site's woodland nature trail. Entry is free.

Don't forget to visit Yorkshire Wildlife Park home to the famous Polar Bears, not forgetting Lions, Tigers and many, many more fabulous animals. Explore the roof top advantage point to see the Giraffe's. There is also pet corner for the little ones to get hands on. All this set in a beautiful setting less than 25 minutes' drive from the hotel.

Enjoy shopping? Head to Meadowhall Shopping Centre, 25 minutes' drive from the hotel, and browse for bargains in almost 300 high-street shops and department stores. Pause for refreshments at one of the juice bars and cafés. You can grab a bite to eat from a fast-food outlet or treat yourself to a restaurant meal. If you fancy a night out, check the listings of the 11-screen cinema complex.

Remember to pack your walking boots so you can explore the Trans Pennine Trail, which is less than a mile from the hotel. Following the long-distance footpath allows you to enjoy the rolling landscape of South Yorkshire. As you're wandering the hillsides, keep your eyes open for wildlife: you may spot mammals such as American minks and fallow deer, plus birds such as garden warblers and gannets.
