A flutter at the races? Doncaster Racecourse is just three miles from the hotel. The course stages flat and national hunt horse racing all year round, culminating in the St Leger Stakes race in September. Watch the horses thunder down the track and cheer them on from the five-storey grandstand or go trackside depending on whether you are placing bets or just soaking up the atmosphere.

Only five miles from the hotel, at Cusworth Hall, kids can feed the ducks, spot kingfishers and run across the bridges in the landscaped garden. Inside the mansion, now a museum, you can view a huge collection reflecting everyday life from the 18th century onwards, including a grand Victorian kitchen with original iron cookware, and admire sweeping biblical paintings and sculptures in the chapel.

The Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery, three miles from the hotel, traces local life through archaeological artefacts, natural history exhibits, paintings and fine art. You can seek out everything from skeletons in stone tombs to stuffed brown bears, model trains and pottery. You can discover life as a soldier, too – the Regimental Gallery of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry is next door.

You can spot zebras, polar bears, rhino's and giraffes in spacious outdoor habitats at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, 12 minutes' drive from the hotel. Watch Bengal tigers playing in the grass, and see rare Amur leopards and curious meerkats staring back at inquisitive visitors. Children can test their balance in the Forest Adventure Play Area, then tuck into an ice cream at an outdoor picnic table.
