Home to the German parliament, the Reichstag is one of the most spectacular buildings in Berlin – it's worth stopping by just to admire its grand Baroque Revival exterior. Book in advance online for a guided tour or a meal in the rooftop restaurant. Best of all, you’ll get the chance to survey the city, and architect Norman Foster’s magnificent glass dome, from the roof terrace.
A slender, space-age spire piercing the sky above Alexanderplatz, the TV Tower, or Fernsehturm, is visible from all over the city. Ride the express elevator to its observation deck, more than 200 metres high, for breathtaking views of the Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate and beyond. Arrive early if you prefer not to wait, or book a timed ticket online to avoid the queues.
Don't Go Home Without
Set in the enormous Tiergarten park, a 10-minute walk from the hotel, Zoo Berlin has been a city favourite since the 1840s. Wander its leafy avenues to spot hippos, giant pandas and gorillas. Children will love the fascinating shows held throughout the day, which include feeding times, with live commentary, for the elephants, king penguins and chimpanzees, and an amusing sea lion display.
If you’re here to explore, a Berlin WelcomeCard offers free or reduced entry to around 200 of the city’s top attractions, including Zoo Berlin, Museum Island and the TV Tower. They’re valid for up to 6 days, and you’ll benefit from free public transport trips and a day’s free use of the hop-on hop-off tourist bus. Pick up at Tourist Information centres, from S-Bahn ticket machines, or online.
