Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 For a place to sleep
I hate to spend a lot of money on a hotel room when I am going to be out and about all day. Though the stay was much less than staying at a hotel near the historic district you need to be aware of some of the hotel's challenges.
1. The room we stayed in had the following problems:
- window/door that wouldn't shut completely (see pic#
- broken ironing board #see pic#
- plug receptacle not screwed into the wall #see pic#
- mattresses that cause tremendous back aches
2. Though you can take a trolley to the historical district for free you may have some discomfort with the other local citizens using the trolley #we drove to the historic district the second day)

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by mimes Difficult to get to
The hotel and grounds seem to be new, are very clean and neat, however, it is very difficult to get there, is not actually on the river (that we could see) and is a distance from the sights and activities that most tourists are coming to see.

Most everything in the area just a short drive away. Easy to get around. Breakfast was typical fare but dining area kept very clean for how busy they are. Nice pool area although it isn't heated and we were there in April.

We are IHG reward members and had a 7 night prepaid stay. The people are friendly; the tall fellow who works breakfast is outstanding. The location in Charleston is good.
The room was small; if you want a refrigerator, you can't have a king bed. We had daily problems with our door lock; often not being able to get in at all. Maintenance said it was "fine". The large stain on the bathroom floor, that was present when we checked in, was washed off 6 days later. The bottom sheets do not fit the mattress. If you roll around a bit, you are directly on the mattress. Parking can be a challenge.
We have stayed in much better Holiday Inn Express hotels. We would have left sooner, but it was paid for.

Beds are high and you might need a foot stoll to get into it, especially if you are short and have orthopedic issues.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Gayla54 Did not meet the high quality of Holiday Inn Express
We have come to expect friendly staff, clean hotel rooms and great service in Holiday Inn Express hotels. We were very disappointed in our stay in this facility. After hours of driving, travelers expect a clean room and bathroom where it is possible to relax. The corridor outside our room as well as the room had not been vacuumed. The room air conditioner was very noisy and was in perpetual high gear which could not be adjusted. The bathroom smelled strongly of mold and had no towel bar for drying wet towels. There was no bath mat. The closet door mirror was cracked. The door to our room would not fully shut and lock unless you gave it an extra tug. The staff and service otherwise was fine, as well as the breakfasts.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Virgil West Great place to stay
We stayed at the Downtown Ashley River Holiday Inn while visiting Charlestown. It was a great place to stay as it started our days with a great breakfast offering and provided a clean, quiet room for our evenings and sleeping. We appreciated and made use of the refrigerator and microwave in the room. All staff were extremely courteous and responsive to our needs.
We felt that the cost was reasonable and the Inn met our needs while visiting Charleston.
The only negatives were minor - the room coffee maker needed to be moved (the floor was the best option) to plug it in, the TV was small for the room size, the room lighting (lamps) was poor, and more functional, comfortable chairs would have been appreciated.
Also, the trolley availability and ease of use was not as we expected, so we ended up driving into the downtown areas instead of using it. We also thought we would have greater walking access to downtown, but the surrounding highways deterred us.
Overall, we were very pleased with the value we received. If you have a car available and wish your hotel to be a base (rather than a spa-like destination) for your visit, then this is an excellent choice!
