Alabama’s capital city is filled with sites signifying historic benchmarks in Southern history. From our Montgomery hotels, it’s easy to hop on a Lightning Route trolley bus and tour the city’s Civil War landmarks. The Confederacy was born in the impressive Alabama State Capitol building; look for the six-sided star marking the spot where Jefferson Davis took the oath of office in 1861 as President of the Confederacy. Admission is free. Across the street in a handsome 1835 Italianate mansion is the first White House of the Confederacy. One hundred years after the Civil War, another struggle was played out on the streets of Montgomery. On the Civil Rights Trail, you can see the pulpit where Dr. Martin Luther King began his ministry and visit the Civil Rights Memorial, designed by architect Maya Lin. Listen as Rosa Parks discusses her refusal to move to the back of the bus at the Rosa Parks Museum.
