Perched above the city on the Königstuhl hill, Heidelberg Castle is a combination of several ruined structures. These include the 16th-century Ottheinrich Building with its sculpture-adorned facade and the Fassbau, home to a massive barrel that held thousands of litres of wine. Ride the funicular up to the castle and explore the extensive gardens with spectacular views of the Rhine Valley.
The Altstadt is charming spot for a shopping spree. Stroll along the cobbled, car-free Hauptstrasse, parallel street Plöck and offshoots for popular high-street brands, independent boutiques, craft galleries and jewellery and gift shops. In warm weather, rest your feet and get a snack at one of the outdoor cafés in the Marktplatz, dominated by the centuries-old Church of the Holy Spirit.
Don't Go Home Without
Originally a vineyard path, the Philosopher’s Walk became a popular spot for Heidelberg University professors’ meditative rambles and inspiration for local poets. Cross the Neckar River via the Altstadt’s 18th-century Old Bridge and climb the Schlangenweg to the hillside pathway. The terraced route features sweeping city views and flowering plants such as Japanese cherry trees and rhododendrons.
If you’re looking for a unique gift to take home to someone sweet, consider the Student’s Kiss. In nostalgic packaging, the rich, dark-chocolate, praline and wafer treat has been made to an original recipe by Knösel Chocolaterie since 1863. Look out for locally brewed beer in Heidelberg’s restaurants and pubs, including organic Klosterhof varieties, brewed on the grounds of a medieval monastery.
