Looking into other hotel groups...

My wife and I joined IHG at the beginning of this year. We love to travel and thought joining ihg wouldn't hurt because maybe we could save a bit on travel as we planned on ramping it up this year and for years to come. We have not been particularly impressed and have begun looking into other hotel groups that we feel might take our preferences more seriously and after our stay in Chelsea we are very turned off by IHG.

We edited our stay preferences at the beginning of our membership to include early check in, rooms away from the elevator and extra pillows. Never have we received extra pillows. We always have to call the front desk.

Also our most recent stay in Chelsea, NY we were located right next to the elevator.

For some reason we had issue using points on one night of that stay via the internet so we called IHG to get assistance setting that up months in advance so we would have it paid and wouldn't need to worry. After the call we thought we had used points to supplement each night and paid off what was left. The first night we see a charge taken from our card for a security deposit which wasn't mentioned at the desk, or taken for any other stay. Then after the second night we see a very large amount being charged on the card and we assume it is an error we can handle before check out. We didn't want to spend two hours navigating our way back to the hotel and cut into our time relaxing. We come to find the morning of check out that the amount was for the final night stay. Supposedly we hadn't paid for that final night.
The first front desk operator is clueless and tells us she will call IHG, but then after the call tells us there is nothing that can be done that day so we will need to email IHG when we get home. Which is a laughable statement. When we get the manager she attempts to talk us into knots, as if we were lying about paying for everything months in advance. She then calls IHG and we are held up waiting until we decide to get things in motion to leave regardless of the outcome. We leave having no money for our return trip and feeling embarrassed and guilty that our friends who paid the way to would have to pay the way back (they stayed in a different hotel, but we are loyal customers). We get a call on the way home that it had all been figured out and the money had been sent back to our account.
Thus far we see no real saving, to earn points you need to pay extra. No special benefits, anyone can request pillows or a room away from an elevator on arrival, you might not get it but being part of the rewards program doesn't guarantee it either. Our biggest issue is falling victim to the lack of communication between IHG and Holiday Inn Express, or whatever error occurred that caused this horrible end to a great trip.
Since then we have been to Fishers, IN for another concert and stayed elsewhere. We unfortunately didn't notice much of a difference. Oh, they didn't thank us for being platinum elite members, the least of our worries.

I've generally been happy with Holiday Inn Express but this property was a little off. My daughter has stayed at the Times Square property and enjoyed it more. I don't know what the comparison is exactly but I wish I had stayed there.

Last minute stay

Needed to book a last minute hotel when my train at Penn station got delayed. The booking process was easy and I was greeted as a rewards member when I reached the hotel. We were told about breakfast, which we took advantage of. Everything was clean and of decent quality. The bathrooms could use a little work but nothing major. Overall a very high quality stay.
