Neighborhoods
Our boutique hotel sits between Dresden’s beautiful Altstadt and its most dynamic artistic district. The neighborhood is centered on the sprawling Kraftwerk Mitte cultural complex, a former power plant that now houses some of the city’s best-loved arts venues and clubs. Surrounding streets are buzzing with talent in workshops and bijou boutiques, intimate bars and cafés. A 10-minute stroll brings you to the Baroque-era Zwinger pleasure palace and stately Semperoper opera house.
Plunge a little further into the Altstadt, Dresden’s diminutive historic district, to find its most beguiling church, the Frauenkirche. And there’s nowhere better to soak up the distinctive skyline than from the elegant promenades that flank the River Elbe, just minutes away on foot.
Kraftwerk Mitte
Opposite our hotel, the post-industrial Kraftwerk Mitte has morphed from power plant into Dresden’s cultural powerhouse. It’s home to Staatsoperette opera and Theater Junge Generation performances, big-name DJs playing in weekend clubs, and exhibition spaces. You can also while away a lazy morning in the arty café and bistro.
Zwinger Palace
This fanciful summer palace simply dazzles. It was commissioned by Augustus the Strong around 1710 to rival Louis XIV’s glittering Versailles palace. Wander through Baroque gates into formal gardens studded with ornate fountains and pavilions. Inside, museums showcase Old Masters, delicate Dresden porcelain, clocks and fob watches.
Dresden Frauenkirche
Dresden’s triumphant rise from the ashes after its destruction in WW2 is startlingly apparent in the Frauenkirche. Left in ruins for decades as stark testament to the horrors of war, its soaring dome once again dominates our skyline. Peer down into the ornate, white-and-gold church from the viewing gallery in its frescoed dome.
Fürstenzug
Grab yourself an instant history lesson with this 100-metre-long mural. It depicts 8 centuries of Saxon rule, with 35 regal princes processing on horseback, tailed by weary foot soldiers and servants. Crafted from 25,000 delicate Meissen tiles, it dates from the early 1900s, and – miraculously – survived the destructive bombing of WW2.
Semperoper
Our city’s handsome, 19th-century opera house is the stuff of fairy tales, and was entirely reconstructed in the 1980s. Its plush, gilded auditorium is host to big-name recitals, stellar ballet performances and crowd-pleasing Mozart operas. Bag yourself a prized ticket and dress up to mix with the crème de la crème of Dresden society.
Staatsoperette Dresden
Music is a Dresden passion and, while the city’s lavish Semperoper opera house may get all the glory, the Staatsoperette has all the fun. This is where you head for a night of lighthearted comic opera, musicals or operetta served up in a soaring, contemporary auditorium. Best of all, its new home is just steps from our hotel.
Theaterkahn
Dresden is full of unique experiences and the Theaterkahn (Barge Theatre) is among the best. Moored by the Augustus Bridge, this century-old barge is now a charming floating performance space. Book a pre-performance feast at Restaurant Kahnaletto for River Elbe views before settling down to cabaret, musical theatre or fast-paced comedy.
Seasonal Concerts
There’s nowhere better to hear music than in Dresden’s gloriously romantic outdoors. Summer concerts along the Elbe riverbanks are hot favorites for soaking up the skyline as you’re lost in the music. Our pick of festivals include the Canaletto, the Palais Sommer and Filmnächte am Elbufer, a heady combination of film and concerts.
Zum Schiesshaus
Adorned with hunting trophies and rustic murals, this traditional tavern is a hotspot for plates of typical Saxon specialities and perfectly poured beer. Creamy Kartoffelsuppe (potato soup) and warming Sauerbraten (pot roast with dumplings) are top picks on the menu. Work up an appetite before you go, as portions are truly enormous.
Café Latte Art
Take a pit stop from sightseeing in the Altstadt at this cute little café, with a counter piled high with enticing cakes and pastries. Opt for a slice of Eierschecke, a classic, layered Saxon concoction of sponge and creamy topping, just perfect with a steaming mug of hot chocolate. In summer, the homemade ice creams go down a treat.
Kastenmeiers Clubrestaurant am Zwinger
Dresden’s chef of the moment, Gerd Kastenmeier, is at the helm of this elegant restaurant close to our hotel. Saxon dishes are given a bright new spin before your eyes in the open kitchen, and fine wines slip down well accompanied by succulent, aged steaks. Dine on the roof terrace for romantic skyline views.
PulverTurm Dresden
Set in the stone vaults of a 16th-century gunpowder tower and decorated with heraldic banners, this Altstadt restaurant offers an entertaining dining experience. Pull up a bench at a long trestle table, and tuck into suckling pig and other traditional Saxon dishes as you are regaled by singers, accordion music and magicians.
