Hotel Indigo Newark Downtown
Hotel Indigo Newark Downtown
At the Hotel Indigo® Newark Downtown hotel, you’ll notice a unique connection between our boutique hotel and the neighborhood. Our building was erected in 1912 and designed by Cass Gilbert as the National State Bank; we still honor these roots today with a front desk created from reclaimed teller desks and by integrating the original bank vault into our restaurant’s design. With exposed brick, beautiful windows, and unique loft configurations, our refreshing guest rooms all feature décor and artwork that reflect the neighborhood’s spirit of innovation and invention. Our restaurant, Alva, invents dishes full of local flavor, while our Skylab bar features freshly prepared cocktails, all just one block from the Prudential Center and a short walk to the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC).

Neighborhoods
Explore our neighborhood.
One of the busiest in New Jersey, the intersection of Broad and Market streets is where downtown Newark’s bustling business, retail and culture have always come together. Situated at the southernmost end of the Passaic River, this neighborhood has long symbolized the merging of modern-day technology and mass communication, suggesting the countless connections that would improve the world to come. Back in the 19th century, every block boomed with innovators of industry: among them, a young Thomas Edison, who followed his own forces of inspiration, ambition and achievement, joining other enterprising engineers and like-minded tinkerers right here in our own remarkable neighborhood.
A walking tour is the perfect way to explore the many beautiful buildings that have been the bed of invention for hundreds of years. In Military Park, see the home of the “Wars of America Statue”; where soldiers were trained for more than 200 years, commencing in 1667.
Art lovers will enjoy a visit to the Newark Museum, the largest in New Jersey. Featuring 80 galleries that display world-class collections from American and Asian to African and Classical, no visitor should miss the Tibetan galleries; they’re considered among the very best in the world.
Take a piece of Newark home with you, and try glass blowing at Glassroots Studio. The intricate glass mosaic mural in our lobby is the work of the renowned artists at the studio.
When you are ready to shop, check out Ferry Street, which runs through the middle of the Newark Ironbound area. Lined with small shops and sprinkled with European-style cafés and eateries, it’s a premier location to shop and enjoy the Portuguese culture.
For classic sounds, pick up tickets to a show at the NJ Performing Arts Center, the artistic, cultural, educational and civic center of New Jersey. The expansive building was designed by architect Barton Myers to honor Newark’s industrial heritage.
To soak in the soulful sounds of our neighborhood, head to the Friday night shows at Priory. Located in a renovated section of the old St. Joseph church, you can still take in many of the original architectural details while sampling their Creole and Southern fare. Even their Sunday brunch features live jazz!
For the feel of something yesteryear, head to this 1950s-themed lounge for eclectic, over-the-top fun, tasty comfort food and wicked cocktails. Shows range from retro to punk and even burlesque, so you’re sure to find something that will catch your interest.
You won’t want to miss the culinary wonders of the Newark Ironbound section, where Portuguese and Spanish cafes, restaurants and nightclubs line the streets. Try Mompou Tapas, Fornos or Fernandes Steak House.
Be sure to try the “best barbeque in the country” at this spot that actually began in 1983 as a mobile concession stand. For years, the Dinosaur's home was the road, serving folks at motorcycle shows, fairs, and festivals throughout the Northeast. Now, they’re a neighborhood favorite known for their care and dedication to serving up high-quality, homemade dishes.
Newark is the perfect neighborhood to enjoy a variety of watering holes. The Edison Ale House is just steps away from the hotel, or take a short walk to the Kilkenny Ale House, an Irish pub.
