Neighborhoods
Explore our neighborhood.
St. Petersburg, like so many works of art, began as a grand idea: a progressive neighborhood brushed with beauty. The bay brought a cultural migration to this place of perfect climate and natural allure. In the 20s, waves of new residents rolled in, bringing their diverse passions to the year-round Eden. It wasn’t long before their pursuits were blended with the vibrant social scene. Everything from plays in the park, to painters on the pier, to postcard photographers strolling the streets. The community embraced this colorful, creative movement, and was even awarded one of the world’s largest Salvador Dali collections. Today, the canvas of St. Petersburg is painted with both a bayside palette and an international creativity—by any description, a masterpiece sparkling in the sun.
It’s hard to imagine anything distracting from the beautiful bay views, but St. Pete boasts a diversified offering of museums. From permanent collections to fascinating traveling exhibits, the Museum of Fine Arts is ready to inspire you. You’ll find masterpieces from Monet, Cézanne and Renoir, a Steuben glass gallery and well-respected photography collections.
The remarkable museum houses the largest collection of works by the Spaniard outside Europe. Opened in 2011, the collection includes 96 oil paintings, many original drawings, books, prints, sculpture, photos, manuscripts, and an extensive archive of documents. When visiting, head to the third floor galleries to see a chronological gathering of Dali’s paintings.
The stunning, permanent collection of world-renowned artist Dale Chihuly’s unique artwork will amaze you with its bright colors. Located in a magnificent 10,000-square-foot setting, the collection is designed so that the art and architecture work together, including an iconic 20-foot sculpture that greets you upon arrival.
Pinellas County’s oldest museum was founded in 1921, and collects, preserves and communicates the history and heritage of Florida with an emphasis on St. Petersburg and the Pinellas Peninsula. Its signature exhibit traces the story of commercial aviation from its inception in St. Petersburg, including a full-size working replica of the airboat, which made aviation history.
Just a few blocks from the hotel, this outdoor concert venue hosts performances including up-and-comers, indie groups and seasoned performers. Whether you like your rock soulful, hip or progressive, there’s a concert for you. And don’t worry about rain: most of the courtyard is covered.
Whether in the large concert hall or kicking back in the intimate Side Door Cabaret, the historic Palladium Theater is consistently ranked as one of the area's most affordable venues for every kind of music genre you can imagine. With everything from classical to jazz and comedy to Celtic, the Palladium brings artists and audiences together. http://www.mypalladium.org/
Located in the heart of downtown, the Mahaffey Theater is a 2,031-seat cultural jewel featuring elegant ballroom space, spectacular waterfront views, and European box-style seating. It hosts top-quality national and international artists and performances – Broadway, classical, pop, comedy, dance and the renowned Florida Orchestra. www.themahaffey.com
Looking for the best live professional theatre in town? The American Stage presents its Mainstage Series in the 182-seat Raymond James Theatre year-round and the annual American Stage in the Park each spring. Founded in 1977, its mission is to make theatrical arts accessible to all members of the community. www.americanstage.org
Tap into a winning combination of fresh, coastal cuisine and relaxed, artful dining at this vibrant restaurant on Beach Drive in downtown St. Pete. This establishment offers 24 beers on tap and a generous selection of boutique-bottled brews. Go for the huge selection of seafood for lunch and dinner, and order the signature "400 Beach" martini.
In a town where seafood is fresh and al fresco dining is a way of life, the Grill stands out for its unpretentious menu, comprised of all-natural meats and locally grown produce, its extensive wine list and cool, downtown vibe. Fresh oysters on the half shell and dishes like the grilled cobia with guacamole, red chili sauce and crispy pork lardons are sure to please.
With its European flair, Café Alma's downtown location is ideal for enjoying coffee in the afternoon or savoring a favorite wine during sunset. Open from lunch to late night, the atmosphere sets the mood for the charming, straightforward international dishes. When night falls, the lights are dimmed and the energy is turned up for memories to be made.
Standing apart from the typical dining experience, Birch & Vine blends casual luxury with timeless elegance and a spectacular view of the bay. Originally constructed in 1924 as apartments, the Spanish Mission-style building is listed in the National Registry of Historic Places. Try the candied almond & oat-crusted French toast, or the fried green tomato benedict.
