Not only does the hotel sit on the very site where the first Australian grape vine was planted but it was also built around the Treasury Building of 1851, which was home to all Premiers of NSW. However scarcely suited to transact the monetary business of the colony, in 1896 a strong room was built to specifically count the money. Today this is known as the Fort Macquarie Room.

My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights. Upon entry, it was[More]
apparent that this was a newly refurbished hotel, all looked clean and fresh. The artwork was interesting, not really to my style, although being art it is very subjective. The check in process was smooth enough and before we knew it we were on our way to our room. In the lift it was a nice change to have a touch card access system rather than where you insert your card in a narrow slot. This made getting access to your floor much slicker.
Room: We stayed in a bayview room on level 5. We were greeted with automatic blinds opening up to a balcony with great water views over Double Bay. The room was clean, tastefully decorated seemed a contemporary French feel, with space for a chaise lounge seating area. The bathroom has separate compartments for the toilet and the shower and also had a built in bath. We also had the convenience of double sinks always a nice bonus. The room had been fitted with smart controls, probably using a control 4 or cbus system. This enabled time of day automatic blinds, turned the a/c on and off as well as a sensor in the bathroom to turn on lighting when walking in. It was a nice touch and a little something extra to the room. The bed was a very comfortable king size bed and as with many hotels plenty of pillows and cushions for you to rest on while sitting back and watching some TV. The cons, would be the control panels on either side of the bed were quite bright as well as the clock which gave a glow at night. We still managed to sleep well, however, I did wake up a few times wondering what the glow was. If there was a possibility to reduce or dim that glow it would be beneficial. In the bathroom it would be great to have a lowlight option for night visits. Although not absolutely necessary I have seen other hotels add this sort of lighting if visiting the bathroom in the middle of the night. Not really a con, just more of a nice to have.
Amenities: The rooftop pool was special. The little booths with beds built in help you relax right away. There were a few kids there also, so it was noisy while they were around, however, had enough moments when there was a break of little ones running around so we could relax. A shame that the booths didn’t have the nice views as they were positioned to the side. Either way it was a spectacular little spot, I think it would be great to be able to hire that spot out for a function. I wonder if that would even be possible with paying guests wanting to use that space also?
I was disappointed that there was not a gym on site. I believe though they had a jogging map around the area and there were some local options they could suggest if you really wanted a workout.
Service: For me service is what makes your stay at any hotel memorable. You could have a flashy place with amazing views, but you could just as easily leave that place with a bad taste in your mouth with bad service from hotel staff. I think the service is up there with one of the best I have experienced. Particularly notable was Francis. He always served with a smile, was confident and knowledgeable and had a genuine nature about him. All in all most of the staff at the club lounge particularly were fantastic (Francis, Bernard? and a friendly French woman who’s name I forgot). They made us feel very welcome, spoilt at times with particular attention to our dietary needs and were always helpful with any requests or questions we had.
I hate to give a place 5 stars, I am always a little conservative and give a rating one less as there is usually something you can improve on, however, in this case, the whole experience of the weekend was a very memorable one and it was made even more special with the excellent service we received, so 5 stars from me. We definitely want to go back. [Less]
