Merida is known as the 'white city' for its safe and calm streets. A perfect morning can be spent tasting the exquisite and authentic Yucatecan gastronomy. At the Santa Ana park you will find stalls with authentic regional food like the salbutes and a wide variety of tacos, like the famous ones of cochinita pibil.Then you can take a tour to Chichen Itza, the most important archaeological site in the state and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once a major Mayan city, it still has stone temples, palaces, markets, baths and ballcourts in various states of preservation, as well as a fine pyramid where astronomical phenomena can be observed at the Spring and Fall equinoxes.
Returning from your tour of Chichen Itza, we suggest you take a walk along Paseo Montejo, the main avenue of the city where you can see beautiful buildings and old residences. To get to the avenue, you can take the Turibus or go walking. Get to know the Monument to the Motherland, one of the most important in the country, in which the history of Mexico is reflected in pink quarry.

Yucatan is famous for the diversity of its culinary options. You will find from the most typical mayan dishes to the modern fusion of Chefs dishes. The most famous dish is the cochinita pibil, made with pork and the annato seed. There are several dishes that come from the mayans to the colonial time as the poc chuc, queso relleno, papadzules, relleno negro, sikilpack, tamales, and several other dishes.
Merida has the second largest historical downtown in Mexico. This area has the 7 original neighborhoods that were created at the beginning of the Colonial time. The Cathedral in Merida was the first one built in America. In the towers you can find a carved stone serpent that the Mayas of the time placed in it to remain them of their own believes. Yucatan has over 1800 arquological sites with a rich history of centurys to discover; also the colonial sites like Izamal and Valladolid. The Biosphera reserves like Celestún and Rio lagartos where more than 500 bird species can be found.
Merida was founded in 1542 by Francisco de Montejo on the top of a Mayan city called Tho, the actual buildings in the downtown were created with the stones of the Mayan pyramids of that city. Merida was chosen out of 30 cities from all over the American continent to be the first American Capital of Culture in 2000 and for the second time in 2018.
Chichen Itza one of New Seven Wonders of the World
The Mayan site at Chichen Itza won as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in July of 2007. Now we have a new light and sound show from Tuesday to Sunday at night.
Yucatan is the paradaise for bird watchers, in the area you can find more than 543 bird spicies. Every year in December, there is a Bird Festival called Tho, that includes a Marathon of 48 hrs of bird watching.
