Real Guatemala

Insider Tips

One of Guatemala's most mystical features is its archaeological heritage, the heart of the Maya World. There are countless sites throughout the country that represent the prehispanic Maya Civilization. The signature site is majestic Tikal and Yaxha with its main walk ways and beautiful lagoon; El Mirador, the largest pyramid by volume in the world; Takalik Abaj with the terraces rising 1500 meters from the Pacific and spanning the Olmec to the Maya Civilizations. As archaeologists learn more about the way the Maya lived in harmony with nature and on a sustainable basis, sites like El Pilar, by the Beliza border, recreate a Maya forest garden. It is no coincidence that the newly renamed Peten airport is now the Mundo Maya Airport and that Guatemala is more and more validating her claim as the hearth of the Maya World. The names roll off the tongue: Topoxte, Nakum, Cancuen, Kaminal Juyu, Quirigua, Uaxactun and Iximche, the ancient Kaqchiquel capital.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great stay We enjoyed this hotel and chose it based in its proximity to the airport. The staff was friendly, the rooms were clean and very modern. The restaurants had a good food selection and the bar had a live jazz salsa band that set the mood just right. Not to far a walk from the local "things to do" and security is always near by even though I didnt pick up a hint of there being a major need to security. 01 July 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by BEST OPTION in GUATEMALA CITY Una estadía extraordinaria.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Staff doesn't speak English The front desk staff didn't really understand English, and didn't understand my room request. It was very hard to adequately communicate. The points promised for Platinum membership were never posted. Several times within a couple of hours each day staff knocked on my door but could not communicate because they did not speak any English. The mini bar could not be plugged in... so nothing was cold. The concierge couldn't set up a simple tour and confirm price, I never felt the comfortable feeling of an IHG hotel the entire time I was there. 25 June 2014
