Nice place to stay - but average hotel

This was my first time in NYC so I don't have comparison to other NYC hotels. This was also my first time at a Holiday Inn Express as I'm used to staying at Holiday Inn , Staybridge suites or Crown [More] Plaza so I don't have the right comparison to other Holiday Inn Express. The hotel appearance was less than attractive but they were hands on renovating the building so I expect that to change in the near future. The reception staff were super friendly and attended to all my needs, answered questions, smiled and made the whole process fun and welcoming. Vending machines were supposed to be in 4 locations but were either missing or with poor selection. No drink vending machine was available. I didn't check if the reception sold drinks. I recommend a stop at a convenience store during your stay for snacks and drinks. Reception was neat and regularly cleaned. There is a concierge desk where you can get tour/transfer details and make reservations. Although a small reception they still fit sofas, tables and chairs for you to relax while waiting in the lobby and they also provide power outlets to charge devices in the lobby. Room seemed aged and worn out but as mentioned before the hotel is being renovated. Toilet seat would not stay up when lifted, bathtub was semi-clogged and paper cups were sealed in plastic but placed on the toilet in stead of the sink (not the best place to keep them). Bed was comfortable, sheets were sufficiently warm and the pillows were comfortable. The air conditioning kept blowing until I figured out how to configure it properly but it was difficult to maintain an even temp in the room. Windows could be opened to get fresh air into the room and they sealed the noise level fully when closed so there was no bother from the NYC traffic. Breakfast was horrible. It was mostly baked goods and no/limited fresh cold cuts, spreads, veggies or fruits. The only thing barely tasty was the pancakes from the pancake machine. I ended up throwing most of my breakfast away and having some elsewhere. WiFi was fast when it worked but three to four times it kicked me out and stayed that way for a few minutes. Probably normal device failures and nothing that bothered. TV channel selection was not that great but still had some fine channels to watch. There was no VOD. This was not the high quality stay I'm used to from Holiday Inn hotels and other IHG chains I stay at. Holiday Inn Express may not be aiming at highest quality but still I expected a bit more. The hotel can become perfect by making minor changes and fixes. The staff is what fully reflects the IHG experience. Their friendliness and welcoming attitude made the stay more enjoyable. Also I list a lot of things I think could be better. I still liked my stay very much. The hotel was safe, secure and mostly comfortable. I can recommend it and the value was great compared to price ! I will probably stay at a Holiday Inn rather than Express next time but I still do recommend this one. [Less]

First Class 5 Star hotel in Midtown Manhattan

I thoroughly recommend this hotel, lovely room and bathroom, both a good size, everything clean, spotless and working as it should. Love the heated bathroom floor! Great central location close to [More] Park, Madison and 5th Avenues. Friendly and accommodating staff and excellent gin bar! Will definitely book again next time in NYC. [Less]
