Kumamoto Castle, one of Japan’s Three Great Castles, is also known as “Ginkgo Castle.” Built by the feudal lord Kato Kiyomasa between 1601 and 1607, the castle has been gradually restored after the Kumamoto Earthquake, and visitors can now tour the keep. About 800 cherry trees bloom here in spring.
