Follow in the footsteps of Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham. Robin's traditional stomping ground of Sherwood Forest is a 45-minute drive from the hotel. Stroll through enchanted woodland and visit Edwinstowe Church, where legend has it he married Maid Marian. Or visit the Major Oak in Edwinstowe, one of the UK's oldest trees and also alleged to have been a hiding place for the Merry Men.
If you don't want to travel too far, Elvaston Castle is a 15-minute drive from the hotel. Lovers of the outdoors can hike in the 200 acres of woodland, park and formal gardens surrounding this elegant country house. Bring a picnic and sit by the lake while your kids explore the play area. You can also follow the canalside Erewash Valley Trail, a 15-minute walk from the hotel in Sandiacre village.
On the hunt for souvenirs? Both Derby and Nottingham have extensive shopping areas eight miles from the hotel. You can browse in around 200 stores at the intu Derby shopping centre, including a Debenhams department store. If you feel like taking in in a movie, the shopping centre also has a 12-screen cinema. For old-school shopping, the UK's largest indoor market, Eagle Market, is next door.
Explore the 1,000 acres of rolling parkland surrounding Chatsworth House, an hour's drive from the hotel. Children will enjoy the estate's farmyard and adventure playground. Get lost in mazes, stroll past sculptures and fountains in the formal gardens, or check out the art collection in the historic house. If you're looking for a wilder hike, you'll be right by the Peak District National Park.
