Madera County's landfill is the site of rich fossil bedthe Fairmead Fossils. Mammoths, Saber Toothed Cats, Camels, Giant Sloths, Miniature Antelopes and Horses have been found: animals that lived a half million years ago! As more dirt is removed, more fossils are found. Over 30,000 specimens have been discovered to date. These fossils are scientific treasures that are helping us understand the natural history of the Central Valley.
