Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very comfortable rooms We drove down from London with our 2 kids to spend a few days in the Newcastle area so after 6 hours of driving was tired and needed a rest. I have stayed in Holiday Inns before so was expecting good standards. Our de luxe rooms were next to each other and were very comfortable. The kids particularly liked the big screen and ability to buy films to watch. The housekeepers tidied the rooms up well and restocked the fridge. The beds were comfy and the complimentary slippers handy. The only issue we had (and other patrons too) was the re-stocking of items on the breakfast buffet, it was inefficient and caused delays as you had to wait for individual items to be restocked to complete your selection. The waitresses though pleasant and helpful did not have a sense of urgency around queues building up due to no sausages, eggs etc. Apart from this I would recommend this hotel and would happily return if I was in the area. Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Handy for A1 Newcastle and Durham No problems with room or noise. Rooms are away from main reception and function rooms. Staff were very helpful, but under pressure due mainly to wedding reception and two or three coach trips at hotel on same evening. We stayed there to attend the international cricket at Durham, on a DBB deal. First night hotel had a couple of coach tours in but plenty of room in restaurant. Jack who waited our table was very good and made sure that everything was ok, couldn't fault the food or service. Breakfast was plentiful and enjoyable. Taxi to cricket ground arrived 5 mins after reception called. Only £7 one way fare. Returned to hotel about 7.30 Saturday evening to be informed that the restaurant was closed as they has a wedding reception and we would need to wait until 8:30pm as the Trader Bar was full with coach tours. Went to room to freshen up, came down at 8:45 to find trader bar still packed with coach tour. Waitress apologised said to order complimentary drinks at bar and she would let us know when table was available. We were informed 30 mins later still no tables but offered full menu service in our rooms, not ideal but again couldn't fault the food and effort from Mandy, we think, to sort out our meal. Mandy also told us to avoid breakfast between7 and 8 to let the coach trippers eat and be on their way. Sunday breakfast was again fine, and the checkout was quick and easy 04 September 2013

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Bedroom The room 620 was in the top floor of the block and the A1 road passes about 300 meters away. The road noise was excessive as there was no sound break barrier at that altitude. This road never seemed to sleep, and that gave me some disturbed sleep. Otherwise, a satisfactory visit. 26 August 2013

The only complaint we had, was that we would have preferred to have been informed of the 30 minute wait for dessert whilst dinning and not just left to wonder and then cancel. But would definitely stay again and would recommend a stay to our friends. 25 August 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good hotel I have been staying here regularly for the past 12 years, for work purposes and can recommend this hotel. The staff are always friendly, welcoming and efficient. Rooms are always comfortable and clean, very quiet too. Breakfast is plentiful both hot and cold food with a good selection of healthy options for those of us who do not wish to eat a fry up. Staff are always very friendly in the dining room and remember regular guests. They always do their best to get things from the kitchen, which may not be on the breakfast buffet. The hotel has plenty of parking and is very close to the A1M, with quick access to Durham and Newcastle. All in all, a good standard of hotel for the reasonable prices charged. I would recommend this hotel to anyone, no matter what their reason for stay. 24 August 2013

Room was comfortable, although we would have preferred a slightly larger bed and the room could do with a freshen-up. However, the aircon worked well, which was welcome. 22 August 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 Evening Meal For me as a frequent user of Holiday Inn hotels this is the first time I have written a negative feedback on a hotel, that although was cheap to stay in I will never stay in again. 1.Receptionist was not friendly as I have come to expect from Holiday Inn's. 2. I ordered a Angus Beef Burger to my room presention was poor just looked as if it had been thrown together chips were overcooked, this is a meal I have had in several other H Inns which I have always enjoyed. Macdonalds offer better value v this hotel. 19 August 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 Bit sleezy, needs a bigger make up I stayed at this hotel for about 12 - 15 times during the past 10 years, since it has not been renovated. In particular the halls, doors, and from the outside it looks VERY used. Can't do much about the noisy Motorway behind the hotel, but good, modern, sound proved windows would help a lot. Hotel staff is friendly / okay. Kitchen is okay but nothing special, quite expencive for the standard. 17 August 2013

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by welcoming As always the staff are very capable and obliging. The room was nice and clean and well organised. However the one problem is with thw bathroom, the toillets are much lower than standard, and so not very easy for senior citizens and the side of the bath is too hiigh, surely this is something that the planners did not take in to consideration when organising the refurbishment. 13 August 2013

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Restaurant - lack of having stayed at the Washington Holiday Inn on previous occasions we were ready for a relaxing evening having had dinner. On this occasion the restaurant was CLOSED. A wedding reception using the restaurant and two large coach parties using one of the conference rooms. Why was the restaurant closed to hotel guests? There are further conference rooms/suits that could have been utilized. Other than this matter the same high standard was enjoyed, just a pity the dampers were put on it by not being able to have dinner other than going to another location. 15 July 2013

No recognition for me who week after week stays with the Holiday Inn brand, and which hotels like this one will be relying on for its custom and turnover. No upgrade, which is ok if its full for the two nights I stayed but not even a bottle of water.. come on!! Rooms are tired especially the aluminium windows. Lounge area although small is perfectly fine. I used room service and the food is always acceptable. I use this hotel on a regular basis when Im in the area, the hotel is handy for A1(M) motorway but the hotel is near nothing exept a HI Express and Toby carvery. Comments to the hotel ,,",must do better, and get those rooms and especially those corridors redecorated" 02 July 2013

The food, whether it is breakfast, lunch or room service, cannot be faulted it is first class. The staff are always polite & nothing is too much trouble for them. Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Good rooms but billing problems The room in this hotel was very good with everything that you need and the hotel in general is fine. We had a few problems while we were there which were: 1) Bought 2 breakfast tickets the night before for £9.50 The next day when I checked my bill on the TV it showed -£19.00 showing as paid from my credit card but then it also showed breakfast +£21.90 meaning that when I was to check out they would have tried to charge me an extra £2.90. This should be automated to show the correct amounts so no idea why they did this. This was corrected but had I not noticed before I checked out it would have taken more time to check out. 2) Breakfast on the Saturday was crazy. It was busy but they were expecting this as they had lots of reserved tables for some coach parties. After we sat down at a table (which there were still plenty of free) we had to wait for over 15 minutes before there were any bacon or fried eggs. The hash browns didn't appear until 20 mins after we arrived at breakfast. The toaster is terrible, big queues forming as people keep changing the settings (which they wouldn't need to do if the toaster worked properly in the first place) so we asked about getting baguettes (which the menu says are available) and after a while they brought out 1 (yes, just 1!) baguette. After we had some of this baguette it was all gone within a few mins and they never brought any more out. We had to ask each time and they only ever brought out 1 at a time from the kitchen even though there was far more demand for it. The whole thing just seems amatuer and not at all like my breakfast experiences in Cardiff or Hull which were so much better. I also asked about getting some muffins instead (as there were none out) and eventually a woman brought some out and then proceeded to cut them with her hands (even though I would have wanted to cut it myself as they shouldn't really be cutting things for customers whilst clearing up the dirty plates at the same time!) Then later I asked again for a baguette as of course there were none out and this same woman then came over later to show me that she had brought out a lovely hot baguette from the kitchen and she actually wanted me to touch it to see how hot it was! Is there no hygeine training in this hotel? We did complain to the front desk about this breakfast service and they offered us 1 free breakfast for the next morning which we accepted 3) After turning up at breakfast the next day which was not as bad as the day before (but there were still no muffins out and we still had to ask about baguettes as they only ever brought out one at a time!) we got back to our room and realised that they had again overcharged us for the breakfast. They had charged us for 2 breakfasts even though one of them was supposed to be complimentary. Thank god that the same person we had complained to the day before was still working the next morning otherwise I have no idea how long it would have taken to check out after correcting the bill yet again. Although the rooms in this hotel are fine, the service leaves a lot to be desired especially at breakfast. It just seems like they were not prepared at all to serve breakfast even though they must do this every morning (and they roughly know how many people are going to turn up as they sell much cheaper breakfasts if you buy a ticket the day before) I would recommend this hotel but just ensure you leave enough time for breakfast and having your bill corrected before you check out! 10 June 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by A Bit Let Down This hotel is in need of a refurbishment, rooms look tired and dated, particularly the room furniture and bathroom. The receptionist was focused on up selling at check in, which I found quite annoying. Breakfast was reasonable quality but poorly stocked, pastries and bread for toast had run out and were not replaced. I woke up with a migraine at 04:45 and found that there were no facilities to buy pain killers or even a cold bottle of water! A facility that many of the hotel's competitors offer. Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Givemeabreak13 After numerous stays as a platinum member this will probably be the last.Whilst the hotel matches most Holiday Inn stays in terms of a good nights sleep the food and customer experience are just plain awful.The current chef seems to have a knack of deep frying everything and on this occasion even the pizza felt deep fried.If you are interested in the apparently grossly unfair bank holiday rosters then the staff interaction will leave you feeling really involved,if not,then prepare to be ignored.Reference the food,as ever the answer to mediocrity is a free drink,but even the cellar man appears capable of ruining the Stella Artois,which trust me when served in the correct glass is virtually impossible to pour flat.Its a shame really because the location for business is really great.Guess I will just have to put up with the commute in and out of Newcastle.Oh yes and no free Wi Fi,not very 21st Century 22 May 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Out of the way location The location of this hotel a few miles outside of Newcastle city centre was ideal. It was in quiet grounds, and although close to a busy main road, little traffic noise could be heard. Ideal for day trips along the coast southwards, and easy to get north avoiding Newcastle. One unexpected bonus I suspect, is that the out of the way location tends not to attract young weekend revellers, or stag/hen night events. In fact it seems to be a popular place for overnight stays for coach holidays for senior citizens, so no late night discos! Pity some of them filled their pockets with items from the breakfast buffet as they left the dining room! The hotel is a little "faded" in décor and the dining room furniture a little old fashioned, with a mixture of unmatching chairs, but overall it was perfectly suitable for a few nights' stay, and the buffet breakfast was very good. Staff very friendly and welcoming. We would stay here again and overall it was very good value for money, especially if choosing the pre-booked non-refundable deal. 20 May 2013
