Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Old Stand-by Went here last weekend to use the annual free Ambassador weekend night night before it expired. At bedtime on the first night I discovered that I had forgotten my toothbrush. I went to the front desk to ask if they had one, at any Holiday Inn Express they would just hand you one. The desk clerk was a trainee. "What is your room number sir?" Tap tap tap on her computer. "What is your name?" Tap tap tap. You forgot a toothbrush? "What is your room number?" Tap tap tap. "I'll have one sent right up". Well I waited a couple of hours but no toothbrush so I finally just put out the lights and went to bed. The next night before returning to the hotel I stopped at Walgreens and picked up a toothbrush. On my way in I stopped by the front desk to let them know that the toothbrush they were sending up they could cancel that. "What is your room number sir?" Tap tap tap "what is your name sir? Tap tap tap "Do you know who you talked to?" "Yes, her name tag said trainee", "was it her over there?", "yes" tap tap tap, what is your room number? Tap tap tap then just a blank stare. No sorry, oops, we were out of toothbrushes or anything. So I go off a little: "it's not very nice to tell someone you're going to do something and then just simply not do it. If you knew last night you weren't going to send up a toothbrush you could have just said so and directed me to Walgreens. What is your room number sir?.... Anyway later a note came under the door with an apology and a free breakfast coupon. The room upgrade was nice, the hotel is well kept and appears to have undergone some recent renovations. Until now pretty much my go-to place in Chicago. Not sure about the future. There are so many choices, not sure if I want to tie myself to this property with the Ambassador program any longer. 28 November 2013

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Poor elevator service When I arrived at the hotel on Saturday it took 25 minutes to get to my room because it took 23 minutes to catch an elevator. When I attempted to check out it took well over 30 minutes to catch an elevator to the lobby. When I asked the customer service rep all he said is its a busy weekend. I've stood in LV in a much larger hotel on a fight weekend and the longest I waited for an elevator was less than a minute. 27 November 2013

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very Nice The hotel is well appointed. The lobby was very nice with the large Christmas tree and large Ginderbread house. The rooms are not large but the beds are very nice and confortable. The pool is not to be missed. The pool area has classic archtecture and styling from 1929 era. However, the daily parking is very expensive. You also have to pay a lot for internet if you're not an IHG Rewards Club member. The hotel is in the perfect location in downtown Chicago. 26 November 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Comfortable bed and excellent breakfast We thought it wasn't a particularly good value. We've traveled a lot and I guess I expected more from the establishment. Since we used to work for Pan Am, and IHC used to be part of Pan Am and we were familiar with the hotels back in the day, I think that's what drove my expectations. The room was nice, but just standard. The breakfast was good, however. Also I thought there might have been more effective sound insulation from street noise, since it's right on Michigan Avenue. Our room was on the northwest corner. We kind of wanted to step in the bar to relax for a bit when we arrived, and I'm sure you can't control this, but the decibel level was so deafening that we went upstairs as fast as we could. Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Meh I've stayed at a lot of hotels in Chicago but the last 2 times have been at this Intercontinental. At best, it's ok. The room is always on a low floor (floors 4 and 5, respectively), there's no newspaper delivery, no WifFi, no anything. There is no light switch by the door (except the one turning on the minuscule overhead light that does nothing) so you flounder in the dark looking for the lamp. On my 2nd stay, it took a full 7 minutes (yes, I timed it) for the water in the shower to get hot--seriously???? And I'm not sure if the carpet on my floor was 100 years old or if it was just designed to look that way, but it is atrociously ugly. I will admit, though, that the beds and pillows are very comfortable and the room was a nice temperature when I arrived. It was also clean and quiet and the bathroom was well lit. And the Starbucks in the lobby has ample seating. Oh, and free WiFi. You can do better, IHG. 25 November 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Nice hotel, brilliant location, a few things missing We stayed at the Intercontinental using my IHG points, which was absolutely great. Wonderful location - right in the middle of everything. Fabulous pool and beautiful hotel. However, we had a big problem which was that the heating in our room didn't work. This was on a v. cold day in town... We asked if it could be sorted out while we were gone for the evening, and then got back to find still no heat, and no explanation or evidence of any further help. We eventually got the engineers back again who confirmed that the system in our room had broken and we would have to move rooms. We did this (midnight by this point) and were also given a free breakfast, which was a nice gesture. Breakfast itself wasn't great though and frankly I think we would have benefited more from being offered free Wifi! (I still have no idea how and why hotels can still charge for Wifi?). 25 November 2013

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by It's all in the details I had called ahead to make sure all the Rewards # for the guests in my party had been added to our rooms prior to arrival; however upon arrival, none of them had been. So we had to each give that information again. A minor inconvenience. I didn't have enough points to get free wifi; my coworkers did; however, they didn't need free wifi as they already had it on their devices. But they would have appreciated not being charged $12 to use the gym. A minor inconvenience. As a female, I would have appreciated more than two guest towels upon arrival without having to call for more. A minor inconvenience. The handle on the shower came off in my hand, which made shutting the shower off a bit of a challenge. Another minor inconvenience. The "do not disturb" tag was so worn, it would not hang on my door and kept falling off. Another minor inconvenience. The room and bed were fine. Just not a memorable experience. I stayed here because this is where my work booked my stay. I would not have chosen this hotel on my own were I going to Chicago. So many choices that better suit my tastes and needs. 22 November 2013

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Outstanding! I’m used to great service and experiences at Intercontinental hotels, but the staff at this hotel is impressive even with high expectations. Margaret at the Ambassador desk made this hotel feel like a home away from home – she remembered little things from prior visits that make me feel like I’m not just one more person to check in. Throughout the stay, she made sure I was enjoying my visit. She is well supported by the front desk, and the cleaning staff was more than happy to accommodate my personal schedule. The location is great, and the pool is amazing. I definitely will choose this hotel for my next Chicago trip. 21 November 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Disappointed in staff. The experience with the hotel intercontinental Chicago started out rocky. I pre paid for the room to get in early bird special when I received the welcome email from them 2 days before arrival I noticed the same room was $30 cheaper. I decided to live chat with a customer service rep asking for a room upgrade he told me he was unable to help me. He stated the reservation was already placed there was no way he could change it.. When I asked him if I could cancel the reservation and get the new rate he told me yes but the cancellation would be as much as the room rental. I've been expressed my thought of the absurdity of this he then recommended that I contact the hotel directly. I called and reached customer service she was very pleasant and helpful. however charged me one additional dollar for the up grade? I didn't understand why she didn't just accommodate the $1 but wasn't going to squabble. Upon arrival the gentleman behind the desk seemed very disinterested and even slightly irritated due to a new clerk next to him asking questions the entire time that we were checking in. Once we were checked in and receive the keys I decided to speak with the concierge to check and see if the quickest way to get to Joes stone crab. The first words out of his mouth were you do have reservations don't you. I was quite taken back by that. Well lets see its Saturday night at one of the best restaurants in the city of course I have reservations. I just looked at him and said yes I do can you tell me the best way to get to the restaurant..He gave me directions but just by chance of luck a gentleman who is a security guard told me the best way to get there which was through the parking garage. Being as it was raining I was very grateful. He even went as far as to walk me down and show me. When we got to the room I was pleasantly surprised we were in the historic tower and I was a larger room. Everything was very clean and put together. I also made mention while making the reservation that it was my 15 year wedding anniversary no one ever commented or said happy anniversary when we arrived at the hotel. I was a little bit bummed by that being as the hotel is known for their attention to detail. again I cannot say enough about the room itself as well as the location of the hotel however service is leaving a lot to be desired. 20 November 2013

Uninterested in being helpful. Was very overpriced compared to much better hotels in the area. Do NOT recommend! 20 November 2013

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Kids cannot wait to return We were in Chicago for a two day family trip to the museums. Very happy to be upgraded to a junior suite. Boys each had their own bed (rollaway bed also used) and we had two spacious bathrooms. The view of MIchigan Avenue was great. We walked everywhere and had no trouble finding food. The hotel' s breakfast buffet was excellent but a bit pricey. We had Starbucks for the second day. We could not ask for anymore pleasant conditions nor more friendly staff! Can't wait to return in more pleasant weather. 19 November 2013

It is close to a lot of restaurants and shopping :) The only thing that bothered my husband and I was the heat unit in our room, which would make continuous loud noises that kept interrupting our sleep. Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Hit or miss This is a big convention hotel. At times the restaurants and bar is packed and you can;t get a seat. The front desk staff turns over constantly, and is pretty poor. Coffee (bad) is in the rooms, and there's a starbucks downstairs that doesn't open until 6. Most Interconti's have coffee in the lobby for those guests who need to be up early to travel, or are just jet lagged. Not here. It's difficult getting into the fitness center early. The front desk code's a room key for you but it never works and you go downstairs in the morning to get the (usually rude) night shift staff to get you a key that works. (this happened 5 times to me over different stays at this place) In the room, the climate control didn't really work properly, either off or on Hi, nothing in between. No face cloths in the bathroom, and the shampoo, gel and lotion were at levels of various stages of use. They did comp the wifi for the first time. 17 November 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Beautiful property and excellent location I visited this hotel for a conference and stayed a few extra days for sightseeing and shopping. It is very centrally located for these activities with convenient transportation and great restaurants in the area. The meeting facilities are fabulous in the historic building representing various international locales and periods of history. The pool area in the fitness center is a must see. I will definitely stay there again when in Chicago. 16 November 2013

The staff of the InterContinental, especially Aravind, made every effort to make sure my stay was memorable and that I was appreciated. I'm a frequent traveler for leisure and staying at this hotel was by far one of my best downtown hotel experiences of any US city. It's been a long time since I've felt this valued and appreciated as a customer and as a Platinum member. The InterContinental would definitely get my return business. I also have to say that the location of this hotel is terrific. It's located across from Nordstrom on the the Magnificent Mile and the Navy Pier and River North areas are all just blocks away. The bedding was absolutely amazing and very luxurious. I slept incredibly well and would love to have a bed just like it in my own home. The staff and this hotel made me feel like I was on top of the world. I look incredibly forward to staying here again. 15 November 2013

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I would stay again Very nice hotel, right on Michigan Avenue. I expect a clean room and good experience from an Intercontinental and this hotel didn't disappoint. People were very friendly and very helpful. We were given a room in the older part of the hotel and it was quite nice; a step back in time to bigger rooms. My wife and I were really pleased overall and we will stay here again. My only beef, and this is true of all hotels in downtown Chicago, was the $63 a day parking fee. One minor detail in an otherwise very nice experience. 14 November 2013

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by on the mile if your just look for a average hotel in a great location this is it but there are to many hotels in the area to limit yourself to this one Sorry but they cant really make this hotel much better as the whloe building is just to out dated not they do try and keep it up to date but this is 2013 and it very hard to work with a building form the 1930's it felt like a holiday inn express in the room feel so save the money and just go to the Holiday in Exrpess down the street. 13 November 2013

I swam 3 times during my 5 night stay & will definitely come back because of the unique pool & historic sections of the old section. 13 November 2013

First time my wife and I have stayed on Michigan Ave. The hotel staff was very friendly, the entire hotel was very clean, the location was great, the bed was very comfortable. Parking is outrageous at $65/night, but the garage staff was very friendly also. I would go back again for sure! 12 November 2013
