The history of medicine from the Victorian age to the present is illuminated at the Thackray Medical Museum, two miles from our hotel. You can discover 50,000 medical instruments, as well as notable artefacts such as Prince Albert's personal medicine chest, and Hitler's blood transfusion set. Public lectures on a range of health-related topics are offered on Saturdays from October to March.

At Tropical World, five miles from the hotel in Roundhay Park, the meerkats are back on display after a cheeky escape attempt was thwarted. Harewood House

Harewood House is home to the Earl of Harewood, cousin to the Queen. The estate was bought with money made from the West Indian sugar trade in 1738 and the house was completed in 1771. The splendid State rooms contain an extensive collection of portraits, porcelain and Below stairs you can see where the servants worked and lived in the kitchen, scullery and servant's hall. There is a permanent display in the housekeeper's room devoted to HRH Princess Mary.
