I have stayed in many Intercontinental properties - over 25 different ones in Asia, Latin America, North America and Europe, including some that have ceased operations - and this property is one of
The grounds are bewitchingly exquisite and the setting mesmerizing. Notwithstanding the historical significance of this property, looking down from our massive window and seeing the perfectly well-preserved old buildings and hearing the sounds and excitement coming from busy street below added to the authenticity of the Shanghai experience that I was looking and hoping for. These are only a few of the many reasons why I fell in love with this property.
The property's proximity to everything that I wanted to do and see during my 3rd visit to the city was my deciding factor in choosing to stay here and I was not disappointed at all.
Spire Ambassador membership was acknowledged and was upgraded to a better room (booked the lowest rate on the website so the upgrade was very much appreciated). Check in was a breeze and we were in my room in no time at all. The gentleman that checked us in was very friendly and efficient and very informative regarding the amenities of the property and gave us a quick overview of what's nearby.
Our 6 big suitcases arrived within 3 minutes and a few seconds after that, a birthday cake was delivered (minus forks and knives but I found a couple of teaspoons in one of the drawers so it wasn't a big deal). I thought that showed genuine care as they probably found out from our passports that my cousin's birthday was coming up in 3 days.
The room was generously large, well appointed and elegantly decorated with a very spacious bathroom. The high ceilings added the feel of more space. The views of the city skylines were spectacular and the sights and sounds of the busy streets below was very exciting. The views at night even more dramatic!
After we came back from walking around the beautifully tree lined streets of the French Concession area, someone knocked on the door with the usual welcome fruit plate and water. However, there was no knives or forks again and this time, no napkins either. Although I am always grateful to receiving the welcome gifts, it's a little bit frustrating when you have no utensils to cut or slice them with. Also, I requested the savoury options beforehand but got the usual fruits instead. I genuinely appreciate them thinking and spoiling their valued guests with little perks like these and I'm always amazed on how they know just the perfect time to deliver all these goods to your room, so the frustrations of not having forks and knives quickly subsided.
Aside from my capricious petty complains, this property is just perfect and my short stay has been incredible!
I will be back again in a few days after a short trip to Vietnam so I'm looking forward to enjoying more of the amenities and trying the well regarded Xin Yuan Lou Restaurant.
Highly recommended and the slightly high price one pays for to stay here is well worth it! [Less]
