The Chatham Historic Dockyard, five miles from the hotel, is a heritage site that's got the lot, from old buildings and new galleries to historic warships and heaps of activities. Explore the warships, have a go at rope-making, or chill out in the Commissioner's garden while the kids let off steam in the indoor and outdoor play areas – just make sure you leave lots of time to do it all justice.

Rochester's High Street, less than 15 minutes' drive from the hotel, has a huge range of charity and antique shops alongside such quirky spots as Dickens-themed sweetshop Sweet Expectations. There are even shops within shops. The Oxfam Shop has a separate music room and gentlemen’s closet, and you could easily get lost in the nooks and crannies of Baggins Book Bazaar.

A ramble round imposing Rochester Castle, just 10 minutes' drive from the hotel, is a treat for all ages. Kids love travelling back in time as they wind their way up the worn stone staircases of the 12th-century keep, and the gardens are a great place for a picnic. Inside the castle, child-friendly exhibits and interactive elements tell the engaging, 1,000-year-old story of the building.

One of the most enjoyable ways to explore Rochester is to follow the trail of its most famous resident, Charles Dickens. Pick up a leaflet from the Visitor Information Centre at 95 High Street and discover how the Victorian writer was involved with many of the town’s key sites – including the 17th-century Guildhall and the Grade II-listed park the Vines, once a vineyard for Rochester Cathedral.
