The Van Abbemuseum houses some 2700 works of contemporary art. Roughly 100,000 visitors per year come to see the diverse collection, which does not only include Dutch and Belgian contemporary works like those of museum founder Henri van Abbe, but also works of Pablo Picasso, El Lissitzky and Wassily Kandinsky. The original museum building from 1936 was extended in 2003 with a strikingly modern new wing to meet the needs of its growing collection. The museum is open till 9pm on Thursdays.
