A renowned classical garden in the lower Yangtze Delta, the Intoxicating Pond Garden is the oldest among the five in Shanghai: it has a history of over 900 years, if we count that of its forebear in it. In the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty(1662-1722), the garden was a private asset of Gu Dashen, a high-ranking official and an artist who admired the Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi so much that he built his own garden modeled on the latters.
