The designer stores and high-street retailers of Birmingham's huge Bullring shopping centre are only half an hour away by train from Bromsgrove station. For something more unusual, browse through 350 stalls at the nearby Rag Market, selling everything from salt fish to curtain fabric. If shopping's not your thing, book tickets for a show at the Hippodrome, or a classical concert at Symphony Hall.

Football fans can drive to a Premiership game at Aston Villa's Villa Park in under 40 minutes, or West Bromwich Albion's Hawthorns stadium in half an hour. Wolverhampton Wanderers' Molineux is less than an hour away. If there's no match on at St Andrews, Birmingham City's home ground, you can tour the dressing rooms and players' tunnel. For rugby fans, Worcester Warriors is 20 minutes away.

Get some fresh air and a local history lesson at the Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings, ten minutes' drive from the hotel. Look out for a windmill, a threshing barn and a medieval town house, all set in 19 acres of gardens and Worcestershire countryside. The museum's National Telephone Kiosk Collection remembers life before mobile phones and, for Doctor Who fans, even includes a TARDIS.
