Fort Kaskaskia is one of Illinois' most significant frontier landmarks, on a bluff above the Mississippi River. Dating to French settlements in the 1700s, Lewis and Clark stopped here in 1803 to recruit expedition members. Explore the fort mounds, historic cemetery, and nearby Pierre Menard House. Picnic shelters and trails make it a great afternoon spot. About 28 minutes away, it pairs with a scenic drive.

Sunlight filters through the wooden planks of Mary's River Covered Bridge, the only covered bridge in Southern Illinois. Built in 1854 as part of a toll road between Bremen and Chester, this 86-foot Burr truss bridge carried traffic for 75 years before state preservation in 1936. The original timber remains intact, offering a glimpse into 19th-century engineering. Today it sits in a peaceful roadside park with picnic tables. About 15 miles away, it's worth the drive for a photo.
