Fort Saint Joseph was founded in the 1600s by Father Allouez and became a trading post on the St. Joseph River to the entire midwest. French, English, Spanish, and American forces all occupied the fort. The Fort St. Joseph Museum in Niles, MI has a wide variety of historical artifacts dating back to the 1600s from the Niles area.
