About 20 minutes' drive from the hotel, chocoholics can trace the journey of their favorite confection from bean to bar at Cadbury World. Live your Charlie and the Chocolate Factory fantasies, taste delicious samples and ride on the Cadbury train. Then, last but certainly not least, stock up on sweets and goodies to take home at the sprawling shop.

You can practice your calligraphy or craft your own fountain pen nib at the Pen Museum, a small, quirky gem which showcases the history of Birmingham's global steel pen trade. Entry is free, so you'll have cash to spare for a trip to the Bullring Shopping Centre, about a mile from the museum.

Adventurous types can try the aerial adventure course and high-speed zip wire at the sprawling Sandwell Valley Country Park, 15 minutes' drive from the hotel. It's also home to a working Victorian farm with a small museum, and offers cycling and fishing on the lake. Or you can treat yourself to a bird handling experience at the Falconry Centre, about 20 minutes' drive from the hotel.

Explore Birmingham city centre at leisure by taking a cruise along its many miles of canals. Check out the striking contemporary mixed-use building called the Cube, or admire the refurbished heritage buildings and absorb the city's industrial past.
