Amazing building and wonderful view

We stopped in Amsterdam for a day on our way back to Oxford. Staying at the Amstel hotel was a very memorable experience. The building is just magnificent - no wonder their past guests included the queen of England. We had a wonderful room with a good size bathroom and an excellent shower. The view of the river and small boats passing by was amazing. The hotel has an exquisite tea room and the most beautiful bar i have ever seen. The food and wine in the downstairs restaurant were excellent. Because it was a rainy day we spent a couple of hours at the hotel swimming pool and gym - just so relaxing and perfect. Overall, one of those wonderful and memorable stays that we will remember for a long time.

Underwhelming for a supposedly world class hotel

Ahead of a recent visit to Amsterdam and Paris where we stayed in a total of five different hotels, all of which were 5 star, the InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam was the hotel I was most excited about staying at. It is supposed to be one of the grandest hotels in Europe and has hosted the likes of Queen Elizabeth and Mick Jagger, and it is priced accordingly. Ironically, it was the most underwhelming stay of our trip, and felt grossly overpriced for the experience. The reception/concierge staff are pleasant, but were disorganised and overly casual. There was no recognition of being a IHG Diamond member, even though I had booked via IHG, I had to ask about the welcome amenities and no room upgrade was offered, even though I understand the hotel was only about 70% occupied. I tried to call the concierge twice to arrange a canal tour, and both times was on hold for 10+ minutes before giving up. The building itself is grand. The rooms are large, but tired. There is not even complimentary bottled water provided in the rooms. Compared to other hotels we enjoyed during our stay, some of which cost half the price charged by the IC Amstel Amsterdam, our experience was deeply underwhelming which is a pity, the building and location provide the opportunity for something far more special.

Wonderful stay, excellent customer service and I would recommend this hotel for anyone who has high expectations! I would certainly comeback to this hotel in Amsterdam.

dommage que l'après COVID se fasse vraiment sentir.. dès l'acceuil, malgré la gentillesse et la compétence du personnel, après avoir connu un Amstel "grandiose", ici on est un peu nostalgique
bien vite une bonne reprise avec tous les services d'un 5 étoiles...

Will Never Go Back

The hotel felt like its abandoned... Did not feel like going into an Intercon. at all. Very poor reception and it is obvious they are short of staff. Very limited room amenities too. I am an IHG diamond member and it did not seem like they do care. Very clear that the hotel is struggling. Not worth the price and experience.

We had a wonderful relaxing stay at The Amstel. Nothing was too much trouble for the friendly but always professional staff members. Our room was spacious and quiet with a fantastic view of the river. We will definitely be back.

Hôtel sale et vétuste

Les photos parlent d'elles-mêmes : linge de lit (oreillers et couette) sale et usé, peinture & papier-peint de la chambre et de la salle de bain sales, avec des trous et des tâches. J'ai fait plus de photos que je partagerai avec le Concierge American Express Platinum/Centurion car cet hôtel fait (pour le moment) encore partie de la collection Fine Hotels & Resorts.
Le room service présente très peu de choix, de mauvaise qualité (club sandwich notamment) et coûteux.
Service à la réception quasiment inexistant, mis en évidence à la fin du séjour où la réceptionniste vous demande de façon mécanique si votre séjour s'est bien passé alors que le management avait été informé la veille de la saleté et la vétusté de la chambre et du linge de lit. Et n'écoute pas votre réponse. Demande par téléphone de la réception de quitter la chambre à 12h30 malgré le statut IHG Platinum Ambassador qui permet un check-out à 16h00. Suite de 55m2 réservée : suite de 55m2 attribuée (n° 322 ; pas de surclassement dans suite présidentielle de 87m2 comme pourtant affichée sur l'application IHG).
Personnel exclusivement extérieur (société prestataire) à partir d'une certaine heure qui n'est pas en mesure de répondre à vos demandes et questions le soir du check-in car ne travaillant pas directement pour l'hôtel.
Malgré son éloignement du centre, cet hôtel, s'il était entretenu et avec une équipe professionnelle, présente beaucoup d'atouts : beauté du bâtiment extérieur, grandeur des parties communes, taille des chambres. Malheureusement les photos parlent d'elles-mêmes et le service est à l'image de ces photos.

From the time we entered the hotel until our departure, we were impressed and treated very well. The suite was gorgeous. The bed and amenities were perfect. Attention to detail showed at all points. This is a beautiful property and the people make it very special.

Beautiful property with welcoming staff

My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights in October. It is a beautiful property on the Amstel river. Our room was felt luxurious and was very clean and comfortable. Bathroom was large and well provisioned. The hotel staff were very friendly, welcoming and accommodating. We felt very well taken care of. The hotel restaurants have beautiful views of the river. Location is great, about a 10 min walk to the busy canal areas where the restaurant and shops are. Would definitely stay again!
