Hiroshima Castle is a flat castle located in the center of Hiroshima City and was built in 1589 by the warlord Terumoto Mori. Because it was built on the delta of the Ota River, the castle was well served by water transportation and became the center of the castle town's development.
It was built in 1620 by Ueda Muneyoshi, a retainer of the Asano clan known as a tea master, as a garden for the villa of the lord of the Asano clan. The garden was named “Shukkei-en” (miniature garden) because of its miniature views of the mountains and rivers, the Kyoto capital, and the beauty of the deep mountains.
