Red Clay State Historic Park spans 263 acres of narrow valleys that were once cotton and pasture lands. This site served as the last seat of the Cherokee national government before the U.S. military enforced the Indian Removal Act of 1830 in 1838, leading to the forced emigration of most Cherokee people from the area. Between 1832 and 1837, eleven general councils were held here.
